''Birrkuta – Wild Honey'' is the fourth studio album by Australian band, Yothu Yindi. It was released in November 1996 via Mushroom Records. It was co-produced by Lamar Lowder and Andrew Farriss. Australian musicologist, Ian McFarlane, compared it to their previous album, " tcontinued ''Freedom''s move towards a broader musical horizon while retaining a strong commercial appeal." At the ARIA Music Awards of 1997, the album was nominated for ARIA Award for Best Indigenous Release. Yothu Yindi
Yothu Yindi (Yolŋu Matha, Yolngu for "child and mother", pronounced ) are an Australian musical group with Australian Aboriginal, Aboriginal and ''List of English words of Malay origin#B, balanda'' (non-Aboriginal) members, formed in 1986 as a merger of two bands formed in 1985 – a white rock group called the Swamp Jockeys and an unnamed Aboriginal folk group. The Aboriginal members came from Yolngu, Yolngu homelands near Yirrkala, Northern Territory, Yirrkala on the Gove Peninsula in Northern Territory's Arnhem Land. ARIA Music Awards Of 1997
The 11th Annual Australian Recording Industry Association Music Awards (generally known as the ARIA Music Awards) were held on 22 September 1997 at the Capitol Theatre in Sydney. The ARIA Charts are the main Australian music sales charts, issued weekly by the Australian Recording Industry Association. The charts are a record of the highest selling songs and albums in various genres in Australia. Galarrwuy Yunupingu
Galarrwuy Yunupingu (born 30 June 1948), also known as James Galarrwuy Yunupingu and Dr Yunupingu, is a leader in the Aboriginal Australian community, and has been involved in the fight for Indigenous land rights in Australia throughout his career. He is a Yolngu man of the Gumatj clan, from Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. He was the 1978 Australian of the Year. Early life and education He was born at Melville Bay, near Yirrkala, on 30 June 1948, and is a member of the Gumatj clan of the Yolngu people. He attended the Mission School at Yirrkala in his formative years, and moved to Brisbane to study at the Methodist Bible College for two years, returning to Gove in 1967. Airi Ingram
Airileke "Airi" David Ingram, also referred to mononymously as Airileke, is a Papua New Guinean-Australian musician and producer. His album ''Weapon of Choice'' (October 2012) was nominated at the ARIA Music Awards of 2013 for Best World Music Album. Biography Ingram was born in Australia, his family comes from a village, Gabagaba, Central Province, Papua New Guinea and he is of Melanesian descent. He grew up in both PNG and Darwin, Northern Territory. He learnt traditional drumming techniques from his grandfather. Ingram joined the Australian Youth Orchestra as a percussionist for a world tour. As a drummer and/or percussionist, he has performed with or been a member of Drum Drum, Telek, Bart Willoughby, Wild Water, Gurrumul, Yothu Yindi, Tribe of Jubal and Grrilla Step. Gurrumul Yunupingu
Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu (22 January 1971 – 25 July 2017), commonly known as Gurrumul and also referred to since his death as Dr G. Yunupingu, was an Aboriginal Australian musician of the Yolŋu peoples. A multi-instrumentalist, he played drums, keyboards, guitar (a right-hand-strung guitar played left-handed) and didgeridoo, but it was the clarity of his singing voice that attracted rave reviews. He sang stories of his land both in Yolŋu languages such as Gaalpu, Gumatj or Djambarrpuynu, a dialect related to Gumatj, and in English. Although his solo career brought him wider acclaim, he was also formerly a member of Yothu Yindi and later of Saltwater Band. Mandawuy Yunupingu
Mandawuy Djarrtjuntjun Yunupingu , formerly Tom Djambayang Bakamana Yunupingu; skin name Gudjuk; also known as Dr Yunupingu (17 September 1956 – 2 June 2013) was an Australian musician and educator. An Aboriginal, in 1989 he became assistant principal of the Yirrkala Community School – which he once attended – and was principal for the following two years. He helped establish the Yolngu Action Group and introduced the Both Ways system, which recognised traditional Aboriginal teaching alongside Western methods. From 1986, he was the frontman of the Aboriginal rock group Yothu Yindi as a singer-songwriter and guitarist. Yothu Yindi released six albums: '' Homeland Movement'' (1989), '' Tribal Voice'' (1991), ''Freedom'' (1993), '' Birrkuta - Wild Honey'' (1996), '' One Blood'' (1999), and '' Garma'' (2000). ARIA Award For Best Indigenous Release
The ARIA Music Award for Best Indigenous Release was an award presented at the annual ARIA Music Awards. It was presented from 1987 through to 1998. Originally titled Best Indigenous Record in 1987. It was renamed Best Aboriginal/Islander Release in 1995. From 1996 it was Best Indigenous Release. The award for Best Indigenous Release was first presented to Coloured Stone for their album ''Human Love''. It was retired after the 1998 awards with Archie Roach winning the final award for his album ''Looking for Butter Boy''. Roach won the award three times and Weddings Parties Anything, Yothu Yindi and Christine Anu each won it twice. Ian McFarlane
Ian McFarlane (born 1959) is an Australian music journalist, music historian and author, whose best known publication is the '' Encyclopedia of Australian Rock and Pop'' (1999), which was updated for a second edition in 2017. As a journalist he started in 1984 with '' Juke'', a rock music newspaper. During the early 1990s he worked for Roadrunner Records while he published a music guide, ''The Australian New Music Record Guide Volume 1: 1976–1980'' (1992). He followed with two fanzines, ''Freedom Train'' and ''Prehistoric Sounds'', both issued during 1994 to 1996. McFarlane's ''The Encyclopedia of Australian Rock and Pop'' is described by the ''Australian Music Guide'' as "the most exhaustive and wide-ranging encyclopedia of Australian music from the 1950s onwards". Aboriginal Rock
Indigenous or Aboriginal rock is a style of music which mixes rock music with the instrumentation and singing styles of Indigenous peoples. Two countries with prominent Aboriginal rock scenes are Australia and Canada. Australia In Australia, Aboriginal rock mixes rock styles and instruments (e.g. electric (guitar, Bass guitar, bass and drums) with Indigenous Australian instruments such as the Didgeridoo and clapsticks. Aboriginal rock is mostly performed by Indigenous bands, although some bands include non-Aboriginal members. Bands include Yothu Yindi, Us Mob and No Fixed Address (band), No Fixed Address. The Australian Rock Database was a website with a searchable online database that listed details of Australian rock music artists, albums, bands, producers and record labels. It was established in 2000 by Swedish national Magnus Holmgren, who had developed an interest in Australian music when visiting as an exchange student.
