Birkenhead Point
Birkenhead Point is a Peninsula, point in Port Jackson, in the suburb of Drummoyne, New South Wales, Australia. The area was once largely industrial but it is now the home to Birkenhead Point Outlet Centre, marina and apartment complex. Birkenhead ferry wharf provides access to the area, as well as Victoria Road, Sydney, Victoria Road which has up to twenty bus services from the city to major centres further west. History In 1844 a salting and boiling down works was established by Charles Abercrombie. In 1900 the Perdriau Brothers set up a rubber importing company, which, as the automobile began to come into fashion, expanded their operation to manufacture rubber tyres. In 1929 Ansell, Dunlop took over and by the 1960s, 1,600 employees produced tyres at the plant. In 1977 the plant closed down, and the site was redeveloped into a waterfront shopping centre. Port Jackson
Port Jackson, consisting of the waters of Sydney Harbour, Middle Harbour, North Harbour and the Lane Cove and Parramatta Rivers, is the ria or natural harbour of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Drummoyne
Drummoyne is a suburb in the Inner West of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Drummoyne is six kilometres west of the Sydney central business district and is the administrative center for the local government area of the City of Canada Bay. Drummoyne sits on the peninsula between Iron Cove and Five Dock Bay. It is surrounded on three sides by the Parramatta River and, as such, has some of Sydney's best waterfront views. Victoria Road is a major road in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, connecting Parramatta with the western end of Anzac Bridge and is currently one of the longest roads in Sydney. The road passes over two major bridges: the Iron Cove Bridge over Iron Cove, and the Gladesville Bridge over the Parramatta River. Boiling Down
Boiling down was the term used in Australia for the process of rendering the fat from animal carcasses to produce tallow. It was a common activity on farms and pastoral properties to produce tallow to be made into soap and candles for domestic use. Boiling down was industrialised in the 1840s, providing the rural sector with a valuable export commodity. It was particularly significant as it came during the 1840s economic depression when the pastoral industry was at a standstill and sheep and cattle otherwise had little value in the colonies. Beginnings The export market for Australian wool suffered a severe price slump in the 1840s. Low demand for cattle and sheep to stock new pastoral runs and the small local market for beef, mutton or lamb meant cattle and sheep had little value in the colonies.
