Birkbeck Students' Union (also Birkbeck Union or Birkbeck SU) is the representative body for students at Birkbeck, University of London, a Public Research University, public research university located in Bloomsbury, London, England. As Birkbeck primarily offers part-time courses, often in the evenings, student life is less centralised than in other universities. Birkbeck Students' Union offers a number of societies for students, as well as a various sports clubs that compete in the University of London league. It also provides student representation and support, a student magazine, a student shop and a bar. Birkbeck is a railway station and light rail stop in the London Borough of Bromley in the southern suburbs of London. On the rail network it is measured from . It is located on Elmers End Road (A214) and alongside Beckenham Crematorium. History and layout National Rail The line through Birkbeck was opened as a double-track branch of the West End of London and Crystal Palace Railway in 1858, but was closed from 1860 to 1863 and again in 1915 until reopened in 1929 as part of the Southern Railway electrification scheme. A year later, on 2 March 1930, a new station was opened, to serve a growing suburban area, and named after the Birkbeck Freehold Land Society, whose name derived from the Yorkshire philanthropist George Birkbeck. In 1983 the line between Beckenham Junction and Bromley Junction was reduced to single track and the former up line and up platform was abandoned. Birkbeck Stratford is the name for a project to expand the provision of part-time Higher Education in east London, made by Birkbeck, University of London in conjunction with the University of East London. The project was part-financed by a £5 million grant from the Higher Education Funding Council for England and the collaboration was formally launched on November 21, 2006. Birkbeck Court
''Birkbeck Court'' is the oldest and largest student residence at University of Strathclyde, and was constructed between 1972 and 1974. It is situated on Cathedral Street, which is at the very centre of Glasgow and the university campus. The halls are made of 16 blocks, each block containing 4 flats which is residence to 6 students. The students have a room to themselves which is also their study area. Unlike a few of the Halls of Residence, Birkbeck court does not have en-suite facilities. There is a shower room with two sinks and a separate toilet room which also contains a sink. The Halls are situated on Strathclyde's John Anderson Campus. This is also the home to most of the lecture theatres, which makes the commute to classes much easier. The campus is in the centre of Glasgow so there is easy access to shops and entertainment facilities. Security The students have three keys that are necessary for them to access their flat and room.
