Birgit Nordbring-Hertz
Birgit Ann-Marie Margareta Nordbring-Hertz, (16 May 1923 – 16 March 2020 in Lund, Sweden) was a Swedish scientist at Lund University known for her work on the interactions between fungi and nematodes. Education Nordbring-Hertz graduated with a medical licentiate degree with a thesis on the opportunistic human pathogenic fungus, ''Candida albicans'', 1956 at Lund University, and received a doctorate in microbiology in 1974 at the same university, working on nematode-trapping fungi. After her doctorate she took over responsibility for the department of microbial ecology, a position she held from 1975 until 1989. In 1987, she was promoted to professor at Lund University, and in 1989 she transitioned to an emeritus position. She was the first female professor at the natural science faculty at Lund University. Lectin
Lectins are carbohydrate-binding proteins that are highly specific for sugar groups that are part of other molecules, so cause agglutination of particular cells or precipitation of glycoconjugates and polysaccharides. Lectins have a role in recognition at the cellular and molecular level and play numerous roles in biological recognition phenomena involving cells, carbohydrates, and proteins. Lectins also mediate attachment and binding of bacteria, viruses, and fungi to their intended targets. Lectins are ubiquitous in nature and are found in many foods. Hans Hertz
Hans Martin Hertz, born 22 August 1955, is a Swedish physicist and professor at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. Biography Hertz was born in Lund, Sweden, to Carl Hellmuth Hertz and his wife Birgit Nordbring. He is the grandson of Gustav Ludwig Hertz and the great great nephew of Heinrich Hertz. His father was a professor in Physics at Lund University and his mother was a professor in microbial ecology. Hertz studied Engineering physics and received his doctorate in Atomic physics from Lund University 1988. After a postdoc at Stanford University he returned to Lund to create his own research group. In 1997 Hertz was appointed professor in biomedical physics at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. Carl Hellmuth Hertz (also written Carl Helmut Hertz, October 15, 1920 – April 29, 1990) was a German physicist known primarily for being involved in the development of inkjet technology and ultrasound technology. He was the son of Gustav Ludwig Hertz and great nephew of Heinrich Hertz. Biography Hellmuth Hertz was born October 15, 1920 in Berlin, Germany. His father was Gustav Hertz who, along with James Franck, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics 1925 for their experiments on inelastic electron collisions in gases. ''Verticillium dahliae'' is a fungal plant pathogen. It causes verticillium wilt in many plant species, causing leaves to curl and discolor. It may cause death in some plants. Over 400 plant species are affected by ''Verticillium'' complex. Management ''Verticillium dahliae'' has a wide host range and can persist as microsclerotia in the soil for years, so management via fallowing or crop rotation generally has little success. The exception to this is rotation using broccoli, which has been shown to decrease ''Verticillium'' severity and incidence in cauliflower fields. Volatility (chemistry)
In chemistry, volatility is a material quality which describes how readily a substance vaporizes. At a given temperature and pressure, a substance with high volatility is more likely to exist as a vapour, while a substance with low volatility is more likely to be a liquid or solid. Volatility can also describe the tendency of a vapor to condense into a liquid or solid; less volatile substances will more readily condense from a vapor than highly volatile ones. Differences in volatility can be observed by comparing how fast substances within a group evaporate (or sublimate in the case of solids) when exposed to the atmosphere. A highly volatile substance such as rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) will quickly evaporate, while a substance with low volatility such as vegetable oil will remain condensed.
