Birdwood is a town near Adelaide, South Australia. It is located in the local government areas of the Adelaide Hills Council and the Mid Murray Council. History Origin of the name Birdwood was originally named ''Blumberg'', by Prussian settlers originating from the area around Zullichau. The original name's origins are uncertain, but it is likely that it derives from Groß Blumberg, a village on the Oder River in the settler's area of origin. The German town name was anglicised to "Birdwood" during World War I, along with many others in the region in 1917. The new name honoured Sir William Birdwood, the Australian Imperial Force general who led the ANZACs at Gallipoli. Around the same time, the government closed the German-language school. Mount Birdwood is a summit in the Spray Mountains range of the Canadian Rockies in Alberta, Canada. Birdwood (Charlottesville, Virginia)
Birdwood is a historic home located on the grounds of the University of Virginia's Birdwood Golf Course near Charlottesville, Albemarle County, Virginia. The documented history of what would come to be known as Birdwood began in the early 18th century, when David Lewis acquired the property in a 3,000 acre land grant from the Crown. Four other owners purchased several hundred acres of this grant over the next 150 years, including John Dabney in 1759, John Kerr in 1793, Hoare Browse Trist in 1800, and William Garth in 1810. Garth built the Birdwood pavilion and four surrounding dependencies between 1819 and 1830; the entrance drive was also built at that time. It has been suggested that Thomas Jefferson's workmen may have assisted with the construction of the buildings due to the shared classical characteristics of the Birdwood structures and the contemporaneous University of Virginia pavilions. Sir George Christopher Molesworth Birdwood (8 December 183228 June 1917) was an Anglo-Indian official, naturalist, and writer. Life The son of General Christopher Birdwood, he was born at Belgaum, then in the Bombay Presidency, on 8 December 1832. He was educated at Plymouth Grammar School and Edinburgh University, where he took his MD degree presenting the thesis ''"The origin of ideas"''. Entering the Bombay Medical Service in 1854, he served in the Persian War of 1856-57, and subsequently became professor at the Grant Medical College, registrar of the university, curator of the museum, and sheriff at Bombay, besides acting as secretary of the Asiatic and Horticultural societies. Birdwood interested himself also in the municipal life of Bombay, where he acquired influence and popularity. Herbert Mills Birdwood LLD (29 May 1837 – 21 February 1907) was an Anglo-Indian judge and administrator. He was the acting governor of Bombay from 16 February 1895 to 18 February 1895. He was also a naturalist and botanist who documented the flora of the Matheran region and headed the botanical section of the Bombay Natural History Society. Early life Birdwood was born on 29 May 1837 in Belgaum, India, the third son of and Lydia (née Taylor) and General Christopher Birdwood (1807–1882) and educated at Plymouth Grammar School, Exeter, the University of Edinburgh (where he distinguished himself in mathematics) and at Peterhouse, Cambridge. Field Marshal William Riddell Birdwood, 1st Baron Birdwood, (13 September 1865 – 17 May 1951) was a British Army officer. He saw active service in the Second Boer War on the staff of Lord Kitchener.
