Birdsall, North Yorkshire
Birdsall is a village and civil parish in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire, England. It was historically part of the East Riding of Yorkshire until 1974. According to the 2001 census it had a population of 180, increasing to 343 at the 2011 Census. The village is about four miles south of Malton, North Yorkshire, Malton and the parish also includes the village of North Grimston. Birdsall House Birdsall House is the seat of Baron Middleton. Mary Birdsall
Mary B. Thistlethwaite Birdsall (1828 in Chester, Pennsylvania – February 1, 1894 in Philadelphia) was an American suffragette, temperance worker, and journalist. Born to English immigrants, she grew up on a farm near Richmond, Indiana, where she married Thomas Birdsall in 1848. They had three sons together. She began her journalism career as the woman's editor at the ''Indiana Farmer'' newspaper. For about five years she owned '' The Lily'', a newspaper for women, which she purchased from suffragist Amelia Bloomer in 1854. She helped organize the second women's rights convention in Indiana. At that Indiana convention in 1852, she was elected as secretary for the newly-formed Indiana Woman's Rights Association (renamed the Indiana Woman's Suffrage Association (IWSA) in 1869, and eventually became president of the organization. James Otis (October 12, 1836 – July 22, 1898) was a Republican member of the New York State Senate and a society leader during the Gilded Age. Early life Otis was born in New York City on October 12, 1836, as a member of the prominent Boston Brahmin Otis family. He was the son of James William Otis (1800–1869) and Martha (née Church) Otis. Richard Birdsall Rogers (15 January 1857 – 2 October 1927) was a Canadian civil engineer, civil and mechanical engineer whose most significant achievement was the design of the Peterborough Lift Lock, a boat lift at Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. From 1874 to 1878, he studied at McGill University, McGill College, Montreal, graduating with a degree in civil and mechanical engineering. In 1879, he was appointed a Provincial Land Surveyor and, in 1880, he became Dominion Land Surveyor, a position he retained until 1884 when he entered private practice, taking up the post of Superintending Engineer of the Trent Canal. Birdsall Parmenas Briscoe (June 10, 1876 – 1971) was an American architect active in Texas, especially in Houston. He was known as "Birdsall Briscoe" or "Birdsall P. Briscoe". Several of his works have been listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places for their architecture. Early life Briscoe was born on June 10, 1876, in Harrisburg, Texas, as son of Andrew Birdsall and Annie Frances (Paine) Briscoe. William Birdsall
William Wilfred Birdsall (1854–1909) was a Quaker educator who was president of Swarthmore College from 1898 to 1902. Birdsall was born in Indiana in 1854, the son of Mary and Thomas Birdsall. His mother, Mary Birdsall, was a premiere suffragist, woman’s rights advocate, and editor in Indiana. She was one of the first women to address the Indiana State Legislature, demanding equal rights to men. Birdsall received a BS from Earlham College in 1873 and then went on to teach at Richmond High School in Indiana. Birdsall became the president of the Boys High School in Wilmington, Delaware. Steve Birdsall (born 1944) of Sydney, Australia, is an aviation writer who has authored many articles and books since the 1960s. He has been published by Air Classics, Flying Review International, Airpower Historian, and the American Aviation Historical Society Journal. His wife is Sandra Birdsall. Samuel Birdsall (May 14, 1791 – February 8, 1872) was an American lawyer and politician who served one term as a U.S. Representative from New York from 1837 to 1839. Biography Born in Hillsdale, New York, Birdsall attended the common schools and studied law in the office of Martin Van Buren. He was admitted to the bar in 1812 and commenced practice in Cooperstown, New York. He married Ann Eliza Kendig and they had three children, Elizabeth Lucinda, Franklin Samuel, and Walter. Birdsall served as a master in chancery in 1815 and moved to Waterloo, New York in 1817. In 1819 he was commissioned Judge Advocate of the New York Militia's 21st Division with the rank of colonel. Richard Birdsall (1799 – 21 January 1852) was a British born Upper Canadian land surveyor, land agent, politician, justice of the peace, and militia officer. Born in rural Yorkshire, England, he emigrated to Upper Canada in 1817, settling initially in the Township of Vaughan. Birdsall received a license for land surveying in 1819 and began his career that same year. Birdsall would go on to survey many areas in Newcastle District as well as other parts of what is now Southern Ontario, establishing the boundaries of many townships of the province and laying out the roads and farming lots within them.
