Birds Anonymous
''Birds Anonymous'' is a 1957 Warner Bros. ''Merrie Melodies'' animated short, directed by Friz Freleng and written by Warren Foster. The short was released on August 10, 1957, and stars Tweety and Sylvester. Plot The cartoon starts with Tweety swinging in his cage, but then Sylvester opens a door and sneaks up on Tweety with blood-shot eyes. Production notes ''Birds Anonymous'' is a reference to the self-help movement Alcoholics Anonymous. The voice of Clarence the cat is similar to that of Marvin the Martian, the creation of Chuck Jones. The voice of the B.A. Cat was used by Blanc for the love-bird in ''Life With Feathers'', among other places. The premise was later adapted into ''The Last Hungry Cat'', again with Sylvester struggling against his conscience over Tweety. Reception Shannon K. Friz Freleng
Isadore "Friz" Freleng (August 21, 1905May 26, 1995), credited as I. Freleng early in his career, was an American animator, cartoonist, director, producer, and composer known for his work at Warner Bros. Cartoons on the ''Looney Tunes'' and '' Merrie Melodies'' series of cartoons. In total he created more than 300 cartoons. He introduced and/or developed several of the studio's biggest stars, including Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, Tweety, Sylvester, Yosemite Sam (to whom he was said to bear more than a passing resemblance), and Speedy Gonzales. The senior director at Warners' Termite Terrace studio, Freleng directed more cartoons than any other director in the studio (a total of 266), and is also the most honored of the Warner directors, having won five Academy Awards and three Emmy Awards. Speedy Gonzales
Speedy Gonzales is an animated cartoon character in the Warner Bros. ''Looney Tunes'' and ''Merrie Melodies'' series of cartoons. He is portrayed as "The Fastest Mouse in all Mexico" with his major traits being the ability to run extremely fast, being quick-witted and heroic while speaking with an exaggerated Mexican accent. He usually wears a yellow ''sombrero'', white shirt and trousers (which was a common traditional outfit worn by men and boys of rural Mexican villages), and a red kerchief, similar to that of some traditional Mexican attires. To date, there have been 46 theatrical shorts made either starring or featuring the character. The 30th Academy Awards ceremony was held on March 26, 1958, to honor the best films of 1957. The Oscar for Best Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium was awarded to Pierre Boulle for ''The Bridge on the River Kwai'', despite the fact that he did not know English. ''The Last Hungry Cat'' is a Warner Bros. '' Merrie Melodies'' cartoon animated short directed by Friz Freleng and Hawley Pratt. The short was released on December 2, 1961, and stars Tweety and Sylvester. Plot The short opens with a shadow of a bear walking up to an outline silhouette of himself and, speaking in a quasi-Hitchcockian accent, announcing, "Tonight, ladies and gentlemen, we bring you a story about...murder." The story opens with Sylvester waiting outside Granny's apartment as she puts Tweety to bed and goes to visit a neighbor. He then sneaks into the apartment and stacks a bunch of furniture to reach the bird cage, but the stack collapses and the fall knocks him out long enough for Tweety to escape. ''Life with Feathers'' is a 1945 Warner Bros. '' Merrie Melodies'' animated short film directed by Friz Freleng. The short was released on March 24, 1945, and is the first cartoon to feature Sylvester the Cat. The title is a play on the longest-running non-musical play on Broadway, ''Life with Father'' (the title being the only connection between the two works). Warner Bros. would produce a film version in 1947. Plot A lovebird decides to commit suicide after his wife Sweetypuss kicks him out of their nest. The bird wants Sylvester to eat him, but the cat thinks the bird is poisonous and refuses. For the rest of the cartoon, the lovebird attempts to get Sylvester to eat him many times. The cartoon ends with the lovebird getting a telegram saying Sweetypuss is moving out, so he escapes from Sylvester in order to keep himself from being eaten.
