Birch Coulee Battlefield
Birch Coulee Battlefield in Renville County, Minnesota, United States, was the site of the Battle of Birch Coulee, the costliest military engagement for U.S. forces during the Dakota War of 1862. It is now a historic site with self-guided trails and markers interpreting the battle from both sides. Birch Coulee was nominated to the National Register of Historic Places for having state-level significance in military history, and was listed in 1973. Geography Birch Coulee Battlefield lies on what, in 1862, was open prairie stretching on to the north and west, with woods to the south. Defining the east edge is a steep wooded ravine, a landform known locally by the French term "coulee," also spelled "coulie" or "cooley." Birch Coulee, known to the Dakota as ''Tanpa Yukan'' (Place of the White Birch), is deep and runs for a total of down to the Minnesota River. Birch Cooley Township is a township in Renville County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 257 at the 2000 census. Birch Cooley Township was organized in 1867, and named after Birch Coulee Creek. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of , of which is land and 0.02% is water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there were 257 people, 95 households, and 68 families residing in the township. The population density was 6.2 people per square mile (2.4/km2). There were 98 housing units at an average density of 2.4/sq mi (0.9/km2). William Rainey Marshall
Willian Rainey Marshall (October 17, 1825January 8, 1896) was an American politician. He was the fifth Governor of Minnesota from January 8, 1866 to January 9, 1870 and was a member of the Republican party. He served as an officer in the 7th Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War (1861–1865). He was born in Columbia, Missouri. Marshall first settled in Illinois and Wisconsin, where he mined for lead and surveyed land. He was elected to served in the Wisconsin State Assembly in the 1st Wisconsin Legislature in 1848 as a Democrat, but his seat was successfully contested by Joseph Bowron, because his home in St. Croix Falls was on the west (Minnesota Territory) side of the new state line. Snana
Snana (1839–1908), also known as Maggie Brass, was a Mdewakanton, Mdewakanton Dakota woman who rescued and protected a fourteen-year-old German girl, Mary Schwandt, after she was taken captive during the Dakota War of 1862. She was reunited with Mary Schwandt Schmidt in 1894, leading to a feature article in the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Snana’s narrative of the war, “Narration of a Friendly Sioux,” was edited by historian Return Ira Holcombe and published in 1901. Snana is one of six Dakota "heroes" commemorated by the Birch Coulee Battlefield#Future of monuments, Faithful Indians’ Monument in Morton, Minnesota.
