Beetle
Beetles are insects that form the order Coleoptera (), in the superorder Endopterygota. Their front pair of wings are hardened into wing-cases, elytra, distinguishing them from most other insects. The Coleoptera, with about 400,000 described species, is the largest of all orders, constituting almost 40% of described insects and 25% of all known animal life-forms; new species are discovered frequently, with estimates suggesting that there are between 0.9 and 2.1 million total species. Found in almost every habitat except the sea and the polar regions, they interact with their ecosystems in several ways: beetles often feed on plants and fungi, break down animal and plant debris, and eat other invertebrates. Some species are serious agricultural pests, such as the Colorado potato beetle, while others such as Coccinellidae (ladybirds or ladybugs) eat aphids, scale insects, thrips, and other plant-sucking insects that damage crops. Beetles typically have a particularly hard e ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Family (biology)
Family ( la, familia, plural ') is one of the eight major hierarchical taxonomic ranks in Linnaean taxonomy. It is classified between order and genus. A family may be divided into subfamilies, which are intermediate ranks between the ranks of family and genus. The official family names are Latin in origin; however, popular names are often used: for example, walnut trees and hickory trees belong to the family Juglandaceae, but that family is commonly referred to as the "walnut family". What belongs to a family—or if a described family should be recognized at all—are proposed and determined by practicing taxonomists. There are no hard rules for describing or recognizing a family, but in plants, they can be characterized on the basis of both vegetative and reproductive features of plant species. Taxonomists often take different positions about descriptions, and there may be no broad consensus across the scientific community for some time. The publishing of new data and opini ... Fire-coloured Beetle
Fire-coloured beetles is the common name for members of the tenebrionoid family Pyrochroidae. The family is found worldwide, and is most diverse at temperate latitudes. Adults measure 2-20 mm; larvae reach 35 mm. Larvae of Pyrochroinae are found associated with the bark of dead trees. They are probably mostly fungivorous, although they may become cannibalistic if too crowded. This family contains some 150 species in 30 genera. The males of many species in the subfamily Pyrochroinae have comb- or antler-like antennae. This family also now includes most former members of the defunct family Pedilidae. 280px, ''Pyrochroa serraticornis'' Genera These 21 genera belong to the family Pyrochroidae: * '' Agnathus'' Germar, 1818 * '' Anisotria'' Young, 1984 * '' Cononotus'' Leconte, 1851 * '' Dendroides'' Latreille, 1810 * '' Exocalopus'' Broun, 1893 * '' Frontodendroidopsis'' Young, 2004 * '' Hemidendroides'' Ferrari, 1869 * '' Lithomacratria'' Wickham, 1914 * '' Malagaethes'' Pollock ... Phyllocladus Aspleniifolius
''Phyllocladus aspleniifolius'', commonly known as the celerytop pine, is an endemic gymnosperm of Tasmania, Australia. It is widespread and common in Tasmania, with the most abundance in the western highlands. Its ‘leaves’ appear similar to those of a celery plant, hence the common name. Description ''Phyllocladus aspeniifolius'' is a large, conical conifer in the family Podocarpaceae. The trunk is erect with horizontal branches. True leaves appear at the seedling stage and are fine and needle-like. Mature leaves are reduced to minute, brown scales. The function of the leaf is taken over by cladodes that look like green diamond shaped leaves, similar to the leaves of a celery plant, hence the common name “celery-top pine”. The cladodes are thick and flattened, 3–8 cm long borne spirally on green stems. The plant may bear male and female cones on the same tree or separate trees in summer. The male cones are cylindrical, 3–5 mm long, with 2-3 together ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Binburrum Articuno
''Binburrum articuno'' is a species of beetle which in the taxonomy field is classified under the genus ''Binburrum''. It exists only in Australia. It is named after the fictional animal known as Articuno from the pop culture franchise known as Pokemon. It was named alongside other beetles from the same genus by Darren Pollock and Yun Hsiao when they found the beetles in the Australian National Insect Collection, and those beetles are ''Binburrum moltres'' and ''Binburrum zapdos'' and because of their names being based on a very popular franchise it saw above average media coverage. The reason for this naming convention is because Moltres and Zapdos are also from the video game franchise Pokemon and in the franchise, they are correlated because they are part of the Legendary Bird Trio centered around the elements of electricity, ice, and fire. Habitat Larvae are found under moist bark of dead trees, including celerytop logs. Adults may be found around foliage and light. Ap ...
