Billy Watson (footballer, Born 1890)
William Watson (born Richard Watson, 11 September 1890 – 1 September 1955) was an English international association footballer who played as a wing half in The Football League either side of World War I. He made over 340 league appearances for Burnley, and was capped on three occasions by England. Outwith football he was an ironmonger and also worked in his father's trade of painter and decorator. In World War I he served with the Royal Army Service Corps and was later a local councillor for the Liberal Party in his hometown of Southport Southport is a seaside town in the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton in Merseyside, England. Birkdale
Birkdale is an area of Southport, within the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton, Merseyside, though historically in Lancashire, in the north-west of England. The area is located on the Irish Sea coast, approximately a mile away from the centre of Southport. From 1894 to 1912, Birkdale and the adjoining suburb/village of Ainsdale were administered by Birkdale Urban District Council before becoming part of the county borough of Southport. Until 1 April 1974, Birkdale lay in the traditional borders of the county of Lancashire. At the 2001 census, the local government ward called Birkdale had a population of 12,265. The Liberal Party was one of the two major political parties in the United Kingdom, along with the Conservative Party, in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Beginning as an alliance of Whigs, free trade–supporting Peelites and reformist Radicals in the 1850s, by the end of the 19th century it had formed four governments under William Gladstone. Despite being divided over the issue of Irish Home Rule, the party returned to government in 1905 and won a landslide victory in the 1906 general election. Under prime ministers Henry Campbell-Bannerman (1905–1908) and H. H. Asquith (1908–1916), the Liberal Party passed reforms that created a basic welfare state.
