Billy Walton (hurler)
William Walton (16 May 1961 – 18 November 2012) was an Irish hurler who played as a left wing-forward for the Kilkenny senior team. Born in Kilkenny, Walton first played competitive hurling during his schooling at St. Kieran's College. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of seventeen when he first linked up with the Kilkenny minor team, before later joining the under-21 side. He made his senior debut in the 1981–82 National Hurling League. Walton went on to play a minor role for Kilkenny for just one season, and won one a set of All-Ireland and Leinster medals as a non-playing substitute, as well as a National Hurling League medal. At club level Walton was a one-time All-Ireland medallist with James Stephens. In addition to this he also won one Leinster medal and one championship medal. James Stephens GAA
James Stephens is a Gaelic Athletic Association club located in Kilkenny, Ireland. The club was founded in 1887 and has enjoyed equal success in both hurling and Gaelic football. History James Stephens was founded in 1887 as a hurling club. The club is named after James Stephens, founding member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood and took part in its first championship in 1888. The club was founded in the area of Patrick Street in Kilkenny city, an area locally known as 'the Village.' The James Stephens colours of red and green were adopted as a result of the purchase of a set of jerseys from Erin's Own at a price of 30 shillings. All-Ireland Senior Club Hurling Championship
The GAA Hurling All-Ireland Senior Club Championship, known simply as the All-Ireland Club Championship, is an annual inter-county hurling competition organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). It is the highest inter-county club hurling competition in Ireland, and has been contested every year since the 1970-71 championship (except for 2020-2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic). The final, currently held on the third Sunday in January, is the culmination of a series of games played between October and February with the winners receiving the Tommy Moore Cup. The All-Ireland Championship has always been played on a straight knockout basis whereby once a team loses they are eliminated from the championship. The 1981–82 All-Ireland Senior Club Hurling Championship was the 12th staging of the All-Ireland Senior Club Hurling Championship, the Gaelic Athletic Association's premier inter-county club hurling tournament. The championship ended on 16 May 1982. Ballyhale Shamrocks were the defending champions, however, they failed to qualify for the championship. On 16 May 1982, James Stephens won the championship following a 3-13 to 3-08 defeat of Mount Sion in the All-Ireland final. This was their second All-Ireland title and their first in six years. Tom Walton (hurler)
Thomas Christopher Walton (24 May 1921 – 18 January 1998) was an Irish hurler. At club level he played with Tullaroan and was an All-Ireland Championship winner with the Kilkenny senior hurling team in 1947. Playing career Walton joined the Kilkenny senior team in 1945 and was at right corner-forward in that year's All-Ireland final defeat by Tipperary. He held the same position when Kilkenny lost a second successive All-Ireland final the following year, this time to Cork, but finally claimed a winners' medal from right wing-forward after a defeat of Cork in one of the greatest finals of all. Walton played in his fourth All-Ireland final in 1950, after being recalled to the panel, but Kilkenny were beaten by a point by Tipperary. The Kilkenny Senior Hurling Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the St Canice's Credit Union Senior Hurling Championship and abbreviated to the Kilkenny SHC) is an annual hurling competition organised by the Kilkenny County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association and contested by the top-ranking senior clubs in the county of Kilkenny in Ireland. The National Hurling League is an annual Inter county, inter-county hurling competition featuring teams from Ireland and England. Founded in 1925 by the Gaelic Athletic Association, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation within the league system. The league has 35 teams divided into six divisions, with either five or six teams in each division. Promotion and relegation between these divisions is a central feature of the league. Although primarily a competition for Irish teams, teams from England – currently Lancashire GAA, Lancashire, London GAA, London and Warwickshire GAA, Warwickshire – also take part, while in the past New York GAA, New York also fielded a team for the latter stages of the league.
