Billy Hayes (musician)
Billy Hayes (born August 7, 1985) is an American musician and former drummer and back-up vocalist for Wavves and Jay Reatard. Hayes first performed in the Memphis hardcore punk band, That Was Then. Later he started playing in psychedelic pop bands MÜTZ, the Barbaras and the Boston Chinks, all based in Memphis, Tennessee. Hayes played drums in Jay Reatard's band from 2005 to 2009. While in Reatard's band, Hayes drummed on the Matador Singles Collection, Watch Me Fall, and a split 7-inch with Sonic Youth. Hayes and bandmate Stephen Pope quit in October 2009 before joining Wavves. In Wavves, he drummed, sang back-up vocals and wrote two songs on their third album '' King of the Beach'': "Convertible Balloon" and "Baby Say Goodbye", the album's closing track. Hayes left Wavves in November 2010. Hayes' song "Stained Glass (Won't You Let Me into Your Heart)" was released on the Wavves EP "Summer is Forever" in January 2011. Noise Rock
Noise rock (sometimes called noise punk) is a noise music, noise-oriented style of experimental rock that spun off from punk rock in the 1980s. Drawing on movements such as minimal music, minimalism, industrial music, and New York hardcore, artists indulge in extreme levels of distortion through the use of electric guitars and, less frequently, electronic instrumentation, either to provide percussive sounds or to contribute to the overall arrangement. Some groups are tied to song structures, such as Sonic Youth. Although they are not representative of the entire genre, they helped popularize noise rock among alternative rock audiences by incorporating melodies into their droning textures of sound, which set a template that numerous other groups followed. ''King of the Beach'' is the third studio album by the American band Wavves. It was set to be released in the USA by Fat Possum Records and in the UK by Bella Union Records on August 3, 2010, but digital copies became available July 1 as a result of early leaks. ''Pitchfork'' placed it at number 50 on its list "The Top 50 Albums of 2010". Nathan Williams on Twitter has confirmed that most of the material from the album was originally demos that he had written with drummer Zach Hill of Hella and Death Grips. Album cover In interviews, Nathan Williams has stated that the album cover is a cartoon version of Snacks, his pet cat. A photo of Snacks was also featured on the cover of Best Coast's debut album, Crazy For You. Snacks died in February 2022, as confirmed on the band's Instagram page. Sonic Youth
Sonic Youth was an American rock band based in New York City, formed in 1981. Founding members Thurston Moore (guitar, vocals), Kim Gordon (bass, vocals, guitar) and Lee Ranaldo (guitar, vocals) remained together for the entire history of the band, while Steve Shelley (drums) followed a series of short-term drummers in 1985, rounding out the core line-up. James Lee Lindsey Jr. (May 1, 1980 – January 13, 2010), known professionally as Jay Reatard, was an American musician from Memphis, Tennessee. He was signed to Matador Records. He released recordings as a solo artist and as a member of the Reatards and Lost Sounds. Biography Early life Lindsey was born in Lilbourn, Missouri, in 1980. He and his family moved to Memphis when he was 8 years old, since his father struggled to find employment in his hometown. His recording career began at age 15, when a homemade demo tape he sent to Goner Records caught the ear of former Oblivian and Goner Records' owner Eric Friedl. Lindsey heard Friedl and the Oblivians bandmates earlier that year when they returned home to Memphis as the opening act for Rocket from the Crypt. Lindsey became enamored of their sloppy, lo-fi music and set forth creating his own brand of heavily distorted garage rock. Garage Punk (fusion Genre)
Garage punk is a rock music fusion genre combining the influences of garage rock, punk rock, and often other genres, that took shape in the indie rock underground between the late 1980s and early 1990s. Bands drew heavily from 1960s garage rock, stripped-down 1970s punk rock, and Detroit proto-punk, and often incorporated numerous other styles into their approach, such as power pop, 1960s girl groups, hardcore punk, blues and early R&B, and surf rock.
