Billy Duffy (hurler)
William "Bill" Duffy (1931 – June 2005) was an Irish hurler who played as a midfielder for the Galway senior team. Duffy made his first appearance for the team during the 1952 championship and was a regular member of the starting fifteen until his retirement due to emigration after the 1955 championship. During that time he failed to win any silverware, however, he lined out against Cork in the 1953 All-Ireland final. Meelick-Eyrecourt is a Gaelic Athletic Association club in the east of County Galway, Ireland, History Meelick-Eyrecourt GAA club was founded in Meelick in the 1880s, and contested the first all-Ireland hurling final in 1887. It borders with Killimor , Portumna and Kiltormer GAA clubs in Galway and St. Rynaghs in Banagher Co. Offaly. The present club has players from the largely rural areas of Clonfert and Meelick, and the small village of Eyrecourt. These three areas make up the local Roman Catholic parish of Eyrecourt, Clonfert and Meelick, which is a small parish located on the south corner of the Diocese of Clonfert. Meelick and Clonfert originally formed separate hurling teams. The Meelick club was founded in 1884. The existing club is sometimes cited as being one of the oldest GAA clubs in Ireland. The 1955 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was the 69th staging of the All-Ireland hurling championship since its establishment by the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1887. The championship began on 24 April 1955 and ended on 4 September 1955. Cork GAA, Cork were the 1954 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Final, defending champions, however, they were defeated in the provincial series. Wexford GAA, Wexford won the title following a 3-13 to 2-8 defeat of Galway GAA, Galway in the 1955 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Final, final. Hurling
Hurling ( ga, iománaÃocht, ') is an outdoor team game of ancient Gaelic Irish origin, played by men. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, the number of players and much terminology. The same game played by women is called camogie ('), which shares a common Gaelic root. The objective of the game is for players to use an ash wood stick called a hurley (in Irish a ', pronounced or ) to hit a small ball called a ' between the opponent's goalposts either over the crossbar for one point or under the crossbar into a net guarded by a goalkeeper for three points.
