He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge with a BA and M.A. He was admitted to the Inner Temple in 1835 and called to the bar in 1839 but never practised law. His father Nicholas Byrne was his predecessor as editor and proprietor of the ''Morning Post'', about whom there is little biographical information in the historical record. Nicholas Byrne took a strongly pro-Conservative editorial stance, and his son was named after William Pitt the Younger. He was mysteriously attacked by a masked intruder around 1833 and never fully recovered, dying of his injuries about two years later. William Richard O'Byrne
William Richard O'Byrne (1823 – 7 July 1896) was an Irish biographer and politician, author of the '' A Naval Biographical Dictionary'' (1849). Life He was elder son of Robert O'Byrne and his wife Martha Trougher, daughter of Joseph Clark. He was a young man when he conceived of publishing a record of the service of every living Royal Navy officer of the executive branch. The work proved an unrewarding struggle. Sir Francis Thornhill Baring appointed him librarian at the Admiralty; but his successor, Algernon Percy, 4th Duke of Northumberland, did not confirm the position. Recognition for O'Byrne's work came from the Royal United Service Institution, and in 1857 he was specially elected a member of the Athenæum Club. On the death of his cousin Georgiana O'Byrne, he succeeded to the Cabinteely estate, County Wicklow. In 1872, he was High Sheriff of Wicklow, and was M.P. for the county from 1874 to 1880. William Francis Thomas O'Byrne (30 April 1908 – 23 October 1951) was an English cricketer. O'Byrne was a right-handed batsman. He was born at Bromley, Kent. O'Byrne made a single first-class appearance for Sussex against Cambridge University at the County Ground, Hove in 1935. In Sussex's first-innings, he was dismissed for 8 runs by James Cameron. In their second-innings, he was dismissed for 26 runs by the same bowler. This was his only major appearance for Sussex. He died at St Leonards-on-Sea, Sussex on 23 October 1951. William Byrne (22 October 1918 – 2001) was an English footballer. Career Byrne joined Port Vale as an amateur in March 1946 and after making his debut in a war cup match in April that year, signed as a professional the next month. He played fifteen league and one FA Cup game in the 1946–47 season, but only scored two goals in wins over Mansfield Town and Notts County in the Third Division South. He left The Old Recreation Ground in July 1947, when manager Gordon Hodgson transfered him to nearby Crewe Alexandra of the Third Division North. He scored one goal in 18 appearances for the "Railwaymen" in 1947–48 and 1948–49 under Frank Hill and then Arthur Turner. Bill Byrne (14 June 1936 – 6 March 2007) was a sports entrepreneur who founded the first women's professional basketball league in the United States. Byrne was born in Stoutsville, Ohio and founded the National Scouting Association (NSA) which represented student-athletes from the collegiate and amateur ranks to seek professional football opportunities. He then founded the Columbus Bucks, a semi-professional football team, playing in the Midwest Football League (MFL) and served as commissioner. Byrne was hired by the Chicago Fire of the start-up World Football League in 1974 as the Player Personnel Director. When that team folded toward the end of the season, Byrne then went to the Shreveport Steamer for the 1975 WFL season in a similar role. The World Football League folded toward the end of the season. William Stephen Byrne (born 19 April 1958) is an Australian Labor politician who was elected to represent Rockhampton in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland at the 2012 state election. He served until his retirement due to ill health in 2017. Clarence William Byrne Jr. is an American retired college athletics administrator. He was the athletic director at the University of Oregon from 1984 to 1992, at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln from 1992 to 2002, and at Texas A&M University from January 2003 to May 8, 2012, when he retired. He was a Special Adviser to Texas A&M University President R. Bowen Loftin until August 31, 2012. Upon leaving the athletic department, he held the title of athletic director emeritus at Texas A&M.
