Billy Bishop Home And Museum
The Billy Bishop Museum is a museum and National Historic Site of Canada in Owen Sound, Ontario, Canada that commemorates the life and achievements of World War I flying ace and Victoria Cross winner Air Marshall William Avery "Billy" Bishop VC, CB, DSO and Bar, MC, DFC, and to Canada's aviation history. The museum is located at his birthplace and childhood home before he went to Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, Ontario. It features displays of artifacts including uniforms, medals, photos, models, etc. from Canadians who fought in the air during World War I and World War II, as well as a tribute to the "Red Baron" Manfred von Richthofen. The house has the original hardwood floors, Victorian furnishings and other personal possessions of the Bishop family. A gift shop is open during museum hours. Owen Sound
Owen Sound ( 2021 Census population 21,612) is a city in Southwestern Ontario, Canada. The county seat of Grey County, it is located at the mouths of the Pottawatomi and Sydenham Rivers on an inlet of Georgian Bay. The primary tourist attractions are the many waterfalls within a short drive of the town. History The area around the upper Great Lakes has been home to the Ojibwe people since prehistory. In 1815, William Fitzwilliam Owen surveyed the area and named the inlet after his older brother Admiral Edward Owen. The name of the area in Ojibwe language is ''Gchi-wiigwedong''. A settlement called "Sydenham" was established in 1840 or 1841 by Charles Rankin in an area that had been inhabited by First Nations people. John Telfer settled here at that time and others followed. ''Billy Bishop Goes to War'' is a Canadian musical, written by John MacLachlan Gray in collaboration with the actor Eric Peterson. One of the most widely produced plays in Canadian theatre, the two-man play dramatizes the life of Canadian World War I fighter pilot Billy Bishop. One member of the cast plays the part of Bishop in word and song, although he is also called upon to dramatize 17 other parts; the second cast member provides all the accompaniment on the piano and also sings. Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen (; 2 May 1892 – 21 April 1918), known in English as Baron von Richthofen or the Red Baron, was a fighter pilot with the German Air Force during World War I.
