Alan Billings
Alan Roy Billings (born 7 October 1942) is an Anglican priest and Labour politician who is currently the South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner. Early life and education Billings was born into a working-class family in Leicester in 1942. His father, Paul Billings, worked at Imperial Typewriters and his mother, Dorothy (), at Byfords Hosiery. He was educated at Wyggeston Grammar School for Boys, Leicester. He went on to study Theology and Philosophy at Emmanuel College, Cambridge (1962-5), receiving a BA degree. He holds a Certificate in Education from Bristol University and further degrees from Leicester University and the New York Theological Seminary. Career Billings trained as a priest at Lincoln Theological College. He was ordained deacon and priest in Leicester Cathedral and was curate at St Mary, Knighton, Leicester. Henry Billings Brown
Henry Billings Brown (March 2, 1836 – September 4, 1913) was an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1891 to 1906. Although a respected lawyer and U.S. District Judge before ascending to the high court, Brown is harshly criticized for writing the majority opinion in ''Plessy v. Ferguson'', widely regarded as one of the most ill-considered decisions ever issued by the Court, which upheld the legality of racial segregation in public transportation. ''Plessy'' legitimized existing state laws establishing racial segregation, and provided an impetus for later segregation statutes. Legislative achievements won during the Reconstruction Era were erased through ''Plessy's'' "separate but equal" doctrine. Henry Billings
Henry Billings (July 13, 1901 – October 1985) was an American artist. He was a painter, illustrator, muralist, and art instructor active in New York City. He was a grandson of John Shaw Billings, a surgeon and the first director of the New York Public Library. Life and work Billings attended St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire. He also studied at the Art Students League of New York, and was a member of the Art Colony of Woodstock, New York. His painting style shows an interest in the mechanical and machinery, as well as an attraction to surrealism. During the New Deal, Billings created a number of murals on commissions overseen by the Treasury Department's Section of Painting and Sculpture (later, the Section of Fine Arts). In 1936–37, he created a series of five murals depicting winter sports for the Lake Placid, New York post office. Harold Billings
Harold Wayne Billings (November 12, 1931 – November 29, 2017) was an American librarian, editor and author best known for his role in developing national and state library networking and resource sharing among libraries. Career Billings received his BA from Pan American College (now Pan American University) in 1953 and his MLS from University of Texas in 1957. He taught high school English, physics, and chemistry in Pharr, Texas 1953–54 before beginning work at the University of Texas Library, Austin. Billings progressed from cataloguer, 1954–57, to assistant chief catalogue librarian, 1957–64, acquisitions librarian, 1965–67, assistant university librarian, 1967–72, associate director of General Libraries, 1972–1977 and finally director of General Libraries, 1978–2003, when he retired. Hammatt Billings
Charles Howland Hammatt Billings (1818–1874) was an artist and architect from Boston, Massachusetts. Among his works are the original illustrations for ''Uncle Tom's Cabin'' (both the initial printing and an expanded 1853 edition), the National Monument to the Forefathers, the Civil War monument in Concord, Mass., and the 19th-century granite canopy (since replaced) for the Plymouth Rock memorial. He worked for some years with his brother Joseph Edward Billings, also an architect. He was the artist of one of the well-noted portrayals of the Battle of Lexington. Elkanah Billings
Elkanah Billings (May 5, 1820 – June 14, 1876) is often referred to as Canada's first paleontologist. Billings was born on a farm by the Rideau River outside Bytown (Ottawa), now known as Billings Estate Museum, Billings Estate. His parents were named Lamira Dow and Braddish Billings. His family included an older sister named Sabra and an older brother Maj Braddish Billings Jr, who practised as an architect and served in the North-West Rebellion. His younger siblings were Samuel, Sarah (known as Sally) and Charles. He was originally educated in law and in 1845, he was called to the Canadian bar. In 1856, he founded the journal the ''Canadian Naturalist (and Geologist)''. He continued to practise law until 1857, when he was hired to be the first paleontologist for Geological Survey of Canada (GSC).
