''Billboard Frolics'' is a 1935 Warner Bros. ''Merrie Melodies'' directed by Friz Freleng. The short was released on November 16, 1935. The short features the song " Merrily We Roll Along" (which would later become the opening theme for the Merrie Melodies cartoons, starting with ''Boulevardier from the Bronx''). Plot The plot consists of signs and billboards coming to life and dancing to the song, and eventually a chick (parody of the Bon Ami chick) jumps down and starts interacting with the environment. Friz Freleng
Isadore "Friz" Freleng (August 21, 1905May 26, 1995), credited as I. Freleng early in his career, was an American animator, cartoonist, director, producer, and composer known for his work at Warner Bros. Cartoons on the ''Looney Tunes'' and '' Merrie Melodies'' series of cartoons. In total he created more than 300 cartoons. He introduced and/or developed several of the studio's biggest stars, including Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, Tweety, Sylvester, Yosemite Sam (to whom he was said to bear more than a passing resemblance), and Speedy Gonzales. The senior director at Warners' Termite Terrace studio, Freleng directed more cartoons than any other director in the studio (a total of 266), and is also the most honored of the Warner directors, having won five Academy Awards and three Emmy Awards. ''Boulevardier from the Bronx'' is a 1936 Warner Bros. ''Merrie Melodies'' cartoon directed by Friz Freleng. The short was released on October 10, 1936. Plot Big-city baseball team with a cocky chicken pitcher named Dizzy Dan plays an exhibition baseball game in Hickville. The townsfolk of Hickville are at the train stop awaiting Dizzy Dan and the Chicago Giants baseball team. However, the train was stopped a little late, so the townspeople pushed the train depot over to cheer for their honored guest. A hen with a blue bonnet is swooned with Dizzy Dan, but her boyfriend Claude, carrying a gnarled bat for the match, grumbles at his girlfriend's idolizing. His Master's Voice (HMV) was the name of a major British record label created in 1901 by The Gramophone Co. Ltd. The phrase was coined in the late 1890s from the title of a painting by English artist Francis Barraud, which depicted a Jack Russell Terrier dog named Nipper listening to a wind-up disc gramophone and tilting his head. In the original, unmodified 1898 painting, the dog was listening to a cylinder phonograph. The painting was also famously used as the trademark and logo of the Victor Talking Machine Company, later known as RCA Victor. Bon Ami () is a brand of scouring powder sold by the Bon Ami Company of Kansas City, Missouri. Since its inception in the late 19th century, the brand's advertising campaigns have gained particular notice. History 19th century The original Bon Ami formula was developed in 1886 by the J. T. Robertson Soap Company as a gentler alternative to quartz-based scouring powders available in stores. In those days, scouring powder was made from tallow and finely ground quartz. When quartz was mined, it was entwined with a mineral called feldspar, and the two had to be separated by hand. Cal Dalton
Cal Dalton (December 2, 1908 – June 1974) was an American animator and director at Warner Bros. Cartoons. Work Dalton's first commercial animation work was in 1930 at the ill-fated Romer Grey Studios. He later worked on an animated short version of '' The Wizard of Oz'' that was produced by Ted Eshbaugh's independent animation studio in 1933. Afterwards, Dalton left to work at Leon Schlesinger Productions, with his first project being 1934's ''Viva Buddy''. All together, Dalton worked on 33 Warner Bros. cartoons as part of their animation department. In 1938, following Friz Freleng's departure, Dalton was promoted to director; for unknown reasons, he was never allowed to be sole director, and shared his duties initially with Cal Howard, and then Ben Hardaway.
