Bill Yates (footballer)
William Yates (20 March 1903 – 13 October 1978) was an English footballer and cricketer. Born in Little Lever, a village near Bolton, Lancashire, Yates played professional football as a goalkeeper for Bolton Wanderers and Watford in the Football League, and also represented non-league side Northfleet United. As a cricketer, he was a leg break bowler and wicket-keeper who played Minor counties cricket for Buckinghamshire. He died in Slough at the age of 75. Football career A goalkeeper, Yates played for his village team, Little Lever St Matthew's, before joining Football League club Bolton Wanderers. Mainly used as an understudy to first-choice custodian Dick Pym, he made six appearances in the First Division during the 1925–26 season. Yates joined Third Division South side Watford in October 1926, and played in all of the club's remaining fixtures in the 1926–27 season. In cricket, a five-wicket haul (also known as a "five–for" or "fifer") occurs when a bowler takes five or more wickets in a single innings. In cricket, a batter is not out if they come out to bat in an innings and have not been dismissed by the end of an innings. The batter is also ''not out'' while their innings is still in progress. Occurrence At least one batter is not out at the end of every innings, because once ten batters are out, the eleventh has no partner to bat on with so the innings ends. Usually two batters finish not out if the batting side declares in first-class cricket, and often at the end of the scheduled number of overs in limited overs cricket. Batters further down the batting order than the not out batters do not come out to the crease at all and are noted as ''did not bat'' rather than ''not out''; by contrast, a batter who comes to the crease but faces no balls is ''not out''.
