Bill Thom
William Charles Thom (born August 15, 1937) was a pitcher who is most notable for winning the 1958 College World Series Most Outstanding Player award while a junior at University of Southern California. He is one of seven players from University of Southern California to win that award. In baseball, the pitcher is the player who throws ("pitches") the baseball from the pitcher's mound toward the catcher to begin each play, with the goal of retiring a batter, who attempts to either make contact with the pitched ball or draw a walk. Wes Rachels
Wesley Adam Rachels (born January 19, 1976 in Los Angeles, California) is a former second baseman who won the 1998 College World Series Most Outstanding Player award while a senior at the University of Southern California. Amateur career While at USC in 1996, he played collegiate summer baseball for the Hyannis Mets of the Cape Cod Baseball League. In the 1998 College World Series, he set a championship game record with seven RBI, and tied another record with five hits in a game. Professional career Rachels was drafted in the 33rd round of the 1998 amateur draft by the Philadelphia Phillies, playing professionally in 1998 and from 2000 to 2002, never reaching the major leagues. He began his professional career with the Batavia Muckdogs, hitting .301 with 16 RBI. He had a good eye at the plate, walking 18 times and striking out only 15 times in 133 at-bats. Rodney Warren Boxberger (born August 22, 1957 in Santa Ana, California) is a former baseball pitcher. He won the 1978 College World Series Most Outstanding Player award while a junior at the University of Southern California (USC). Professional career Boxberger was drafted twice by two different major league teams. In the 1975 amateur draft, he was taken in the second round by the New York Mets. In 1978, he was taken in the first round, 11th overall, by the Houston Astros. He played six years professionally, never reaching the big leagues. His first professional season was 1978. He split the season between the Daytona Beach Astros and Columbus Astros. He went 1–2 with a 1.20 ERA in three games with Daytona Beach and 5–5 with a 4.18 ERA in 11 games with Columbus. George E. Milke (born 1954) is a former baseball pitcher. He won the 1974 College World Series Most Outstanding Player award while a sophomore at University of Southern California. He is one of seven players from USC to win that award. The others are Bill Thom, Bud Hollowell, Bill Seinsoth, Russ McQueen, Rod Boxberger and Wes Rachels. Prior to playing collegiately, he attended Marian Catholic High School in San Diego, California. In 1973 and 1974, he played for the Alaska Goldpanners of the Alaska Baseball League. Following his college career, he played professionally from 1975 to 1979, although he never reached the big leagues. He was first drafted by the California Angels in the sixth round of the 1972 draft, but he chose not to sign. When he was drafted by the New York Mets in the third round of the 1975 draft, he did sign.
