(William) George Spencer (1790–1866) was an English schoolmaster and tutor, known as a mathematical writer. Life Born at Derby in 1790, he was the son of Matthew Spencer (1762–1827), schoolmaster at Derby, by his wife Catherine Taylor; Thomas Spencer (1796–1853) was his younger brother. He was educated at his father's school in Derby. After assisting his father he began, at the age of 17, to take private pupils in algebra, Euclid, astronomy, physics, and other mathematical subjects, and continued to teach throughout life. As an educator he was noted as a follower of Johann Pestalozzi, and for his teaching of girls, who made up at least half of his students, without difference of syllabus. Illness forced him to give up school teaching around 1825, however, and he moved to Nottingham, taking up the lace business. He then returned to Derby, to work as a tutor. The Honorable William Spencer (August 6, 1782 –January 19, 1871) was an American lawyer, judge, postmaster, and representative in the Vermont Legislature from Corinth in Orange County. Early life and education He was born in Hartford, Connecticut, to Ashbel Spencer and Abigail Birdwell. He was a college graduate, although the specifics of his education are unknown. Career He formed the law firm Spencer & Vilas with Levi Baker Vilas whose son William Freeman Vilas was a U.S. Senator and Postmaster General under President Cleveland. He was the 11th Judge of the Orange County Court. William Robert Spencer (9 January 176922/23 October 1834) was an English poet and wit from the Spencer family. Life He was the younger son of Lord Charles Spencer and his wife Mary Beauclerk. He was the grandson of Charles Spencer, 3rd Duke of Marlborough on his father's side and Vere Beauclerk, 1st Baron Vere on his mother's. Born in Kensington Palace, Spencer was educated at Harrow School and matriculated at Christ Church, Oxford in 1786, though he left the university without receiving a degree. William Allen Spencer (June 23, 1936 – December 3, 2020) competed in the 1964 and 1968 Winter Olympics on the United States Biathlon Team. Bill Spencer died on Thursday, December 3, 2020. He was 84 years old. Early life Spencer was born in Russellville, Alabama. His family later moved to Salt Lake City where he attended South High School. He was a 1959 Collegiate All-American skier at the University of Utah where he was also a member of Sigma Pi fraternity. He graduated from Utah in 1961 and served in the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1984, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. From 1963 to 1968, he was assigned to Ft. Richardson in Alaska with his wife Judy, a son and two daughters. He completed two tours of duty in the Vietnam War as an infantry officer, earning three Bronze Star Medals (one with Valor), three Air Medals (one with Valor), and three Army Commendation Medals.
