Billy Simpson (jockey)
William Henry Simpson (c. 1840 – 5 March 1873) was a prominent jockey in the early days of South Australia, who has been called "the colonial Chifney" and "the Fred Archer of South Australia". History Simpson was taught to ride by the noted trainer William Malcolm (c. 1813 – 25 November 1858) of "Wymondbury" at The Reedbeds, and was riding professionally when quite young. For some years he was employed by the Fisher brothers, then after they stopped racing was hired by other owners, among them Gabriel Bennett, Richard Holland and Thomas Ryan, and probably had more successes than any other contemporary jockey. On 30 December 1864 during the first heat for the Ladies' Purse at Thebarton, Simpson was riding J. Filgate's horse "Bacchus", and soon after the start the horse ran close to one of the posts, and Simpson was thrown violently to the ground. William Simpson (1878–1962) was an English professional footballer who made 143 appearances in the Football League playing for Sunderland and Lincoln City. He played as a left back or centre half. Life and career Simpson was born in Sunderland, which was then in County Durham, and played football for Wearside League club Selbourne before beginning his professional career with Sunderland A.F.C. William J. Simpson (12 December 1929 – 27 January 2017) was a Northern Ireland international footballer, who played for Linfield, Rangers, Stirling Albion, Partick Thistle and Oxford United. Career Simpson signed for Rangers from Linfield for a sum of Β£11,500 in 1950. He spent nine years (1950–59) at Rangers making 239 appearances and scoring 163 goals. He won three championship medals and a Scottish Cup winners medal with Rangers to add to the two Irish League and two Irish Cups he won with Linfield. He left Ibrox in 1959 and spent the last couple of years of his career with Stirling Albion, Partick Thistle and (then non-league) Oxford United. As an illustration of his popularity, in the fictional song "A Trip to Ibrox" Billy Simpson is credited with scoring twice in a "Ne'erday" Old Firm Derby at Ibrox. Later during his business career he branched into developing equipment for football safety. Racing career Simpson started in drag racing and SCCA Formula racing, eventually moving up to the USAC Championship Car series. He raced in the 1968-1974 and 1976-1977 seasons, with 52 career starts. He qualified twentieth for the 1974 Indianapolis 500, and finished thirteenth. He finished in the top ten 11 times, with his best finish in 6th position in 1970 at Milwaukee. William Thomas Simpson (born December 5, 1951) is a former American football defensive back who played professionally in the National Football League (NFL) from 1974 to 1982. Before his NFL career, he played defensive back and punted for Michigan State University and was selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the second round of the 1974 NFL Draft. He was a standout athlete at Royal Oak Shrine High School and was elected to the Archdiocese of Detroit Catholic High School League Hall of Fame in 2007. Early life Simpson was born in Jakarta on 17 July 1987 to parents who have neither the interest nor background in music that throughout his childhood years, his exposure to music was thus relatively limited.
