Bill Shepherd (English Footballer)
Bill Shepherd (25 September 1920 – January 1983) was an English professional footballer, who played as a full-back for Liverpool in the Football League. Shepherd signed for Liverpool from Elm Park in 1948. He was a regular in the starting lineup during his first season at the club as he made 41 appearances during the 1948–49 season. However, during his next three seasons at the club he was only a bit-part player, making only 13 appearances before he left in 1952. The Football League
The English Football League (EFL) is a league of professional football clubs from England and Wales. Founded in 1888 as the Football League, the league is the oldest such competition in the world. It was the top-level football league in England from its foundation until 1992, when the top 22 clubs split from it to form the Premier League. 1948–49 Football League
The 1948– 49 season was the 50th completed season of The Football League. Final league tables Beginning with the season 1894–95, clubs finishing level on points were separated according to goal average (goals scored divided by goals conceded), or more properly put, goal ratio. In case one or more teams had the same goal difference, this system favoured those teams who had scored fewer goals. The goal average system was eventually scrapped beginning with the 1976–77 season. The Lancashire Combination was a football league founded in the North West of England in 1891–92. It absorbed the Lancashire League in 1903. Wigan ( ) is a large town in Greater Manchester, England, on the River Douglas. The town is midway between the two cities of Manchester, to the south-east, and Liverpool, to the south-west.
