Bill Payne (athlete)
Bill Payne (born 21 December 1967) is a retired American pole vaulter. He won the silver medal at the 1991 Summer Universiade, and competed at the 1995 World Championships without reaching the final. His personal best is 5.86 metres, achieved in May 1991 in Houston. This result secures him a place on the all-time list in pole vault, and places him thirteenth on the American all-time list behind Jeff Hartwig, Timothy Mack, Toby Stevenson, Brad Walker, Lawrence Johnson, Scott Huffman, Joe Dial, Dean Starkey, Jacob Davis, Nick Hysong, Kory Tarpenning and Earl Bell Earl Holmes Bell (born August 25, 1955) is a retired American pole vaulter. Universiade Medalists In Athletics (track And Field)
The Universiade is an international multi-sport event, organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The name is a portmanteau of the words "University" and "Olympiad". The Universiade is referred to in English as the World University Games or World Student Games; however, this latter term can also refer to competitions for sub-University grades students. In July 2020 as part of a new branding system by the FISU, it was stated that the Universiade will be officially branded as the FISU World University Games. Earl Bell (athletics)
Earl Holmes Bell (born August 25, 1955) is a retired American pole vaulter. He competed at the 1976, 1984 and 1988 Olympics and won a bronze medal in 1984, placing fourth in 1988 and sixth in 1976. He also briefly held the world record in 1976, and coached several of America's leading vaulters during his retirement years. In 2002, he was inducted into the National Track and Field Hall of Fame. Biography Bell was born in Panama to William "Papa" K. Bell and Yola Zimmerman Bell. His father was a medical doctor, a Masters Record Holder pole vaulter, and attended the University of Arkansas. The family moved from Panama to Jonesboro, Arkansas in 1960. In 1973, Bell entered Arkansas State University. He graduated in 1988 with a BSc degree in accounting. Nick E. Hysong (born December 9, 1971 in Winslow, Arizona) is an American athlete competing in the men's pole vault. Best known for winning the Olympic gold medal in 2000 with a personal best jump of 5.90 metres, he also won a bronze medal at the 2001 World Championships in Athletics. Has excellent speed. Joe Dial (born October 26, 1962, in Marlow, Oklahoma) is a retired American pole vaulter, best known for winning the bronze medal at the 1989 World Indoor Championships in Budapest. His personal best was 5.96 metres, achieved in June 1987 in Norman, Oklahoma. While competing for Marlow High School, he was ''Track and Field News'' "High School Athlete of the Year" in 1981. Since retiring from the sport, Dial has turned to coaching. He was the head coach of the men's and women's track and cross country programs at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma from 1993-2022. During his tenure at ORU, he coached 50 All-Americans and turned ORU into a powerhouse in the Mid-Continent Conference. Pole vaulting, also known as pole jumping, is a track and field event in which an athlete uses a long and flexible pole, usually made from fiberglass or carbon fiber, as an aid to jump over a bar. Pole jumping competitions were known to the Mycenaean Greeks, Minoan Greeks and Celts. It has been a full medal event at the Olympic Games since 1896 for men and since 2000 for women.
