Bill Monroe Memorial Festival
The Bean Blossom Festival, later the Bill Monroe Memorial Festival, was an early bluegrass music festival held annually in Beanblossom, Indiana. The Bean Blossom festival was known for its jam sessions including well-known bluegrass musicians. History The Bean Blossom Festival was founded in 1966 by Bill Monroe, who is considered by many to be the originator of the bluegrass genre. In 1973, an album of live music, titled ''Bean Blossom'', was recorded at the festival. By 1974, about 20,000 people were attending the festival each year. Many well-known bluegrass musicians and bands have performed at the festival, including the Dry Branch Fire Squad in 1979. By 1985, the Bean Blossom Festival was the biggest bluegrass festival in the United States. The festival hosts the induction ceremonies for Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Hall of Fame. Beanblossom, Indiana
Beanblossom, also spelled Bean Blossom, is an unincorporated community in Jackson Township, Brown County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. The town was named for the nearby Beanblossom Creek, which was in turn named for a person whose surname was Beanblossom. History Beanblossom was originally called Georgetown, for George Grove who ran a grist mill in the area and under the latter name was founded in 1833. The first post office in the community was established as Bean Blossom in 1842; the post office was discontinued in 1911. Geography Beanblossom is located at , about four miles (6 km) north of Nashville at the intersection of state roads 45 and 135. The closest town to Beanblossom is Helmsburg, approximately two miles west. William Smith "Bill" Monroe (; September 13, 1911 – September 9, 1996) was an American mandolinist, singer, and songwriter, who created the bluegrass music genre. Because of this, he is often called the " Father of Bluegrass". The genre takes its name from his band, the Blue Grass Boys, who named their group for the bluegrass of Monroe's home state of Kentucky. He described the genre as "Scottish bagpipes and ole-time fiddlin'. It's Methodist and Holiness and Baptist. It's blues and jazz, and it has a high lonesome sound." The Dry Branch Fire Squad is an American traditional-style bluegrass band from Virginia, which is fronted by Ron Thomason. The band is known for its showy performances and for Thomason's humorous interludes. The Bill Monroe Farm is a historic farm attributed to being the birthplace of Bill Monroe, creator of the bluegrass music genre. The farm is 1,000 acres (4.0km²) and is located near Rosine in Ohio County, Kentucky. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. With Location The property is in Rosine in Ohio County, Kentucky, and is about 2 miles to the west of where U.S. Route 62 and Kentucky Route 1544 meet. Buildings The main house, the Bill Monroe Homeplace is a 1,000 square feet (93 m2) building built in 1920. It was built on the site of a saddlebag log cabin which burned in 1916, which was the birthplace of Bill Monroe and many of his siblings. The 1920 building incorporated the original chimney and hearth of the log cabin. The Charlie Monroe House was originally built in 1945 or 1946 and was regarded as non-contributing in the National Register listing. Bill Monroe Museum
The Bill Monroe Museum is a project of Ohio County and the Ohio County Tourism Commission. It is the only Museum dedicated entirely to the life and legacy of Bill Monroe and the early foundations of bluegrass music. The museum opened April 24, 2018 in Rosine, Kentucky. The ground was broken on May 22, 2017 just across the street in Rosine from the Rosine Barn Jamboree in a field where Bill Monroe himself used to play baseball before performing for crowds. This was the result of two years' collaboration with local and state dignitaries to secure funding for the building. Currently, while construction is fully funded and construction is not in question, there is not enough funding to finish the build-out on the inside of the museum. Jody Flener, Executive Director of Ohio County Tourism, said, "without additional funding, we won't be able to open to the public. A shell and memorabilia doesn't quite make a museum."
