Bill Long (ice Hockey)
Bill Long (January 2, 1917 – July 24, 2006) was a Canadian ice hockey player and coach. Early life Long was born in Barrie, Ontario. He played with the Pittsburgh Hornets of the American Hockey League in the 1939–40 season. Career Long spent three decades coaching in the Ontario Hockey League with the Niagara Falls Flyers, London Knights and Ottawa 67's. The OHL created the Bill Long Award in his honour, for distinguished lifetime service to the league. He won the Memorial Cup with the Flyers in 1965. Long was awarded the Matt Leyden Trophy as Coach of the Year in 1976 and 1977. A longtime resident of Lafayette, he served ten years in the Indiana House of Representatives as a Republican. Bill Long (28 April 1932 – 21 May 2010) was an Irish writer and broadcaster. He often featured on RTÉ Radio 1. He was also Ireland's longest surviving heart transplant patient. Early life Long was born a Catholic in Waterford in 1932. He lived in a thatched house with his immediate and extended family, including his mother, father, brother and his mother's parents. His father was a grower of vegetables. Long was fond of reading as a child, devouring Henry David Thoreau, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Zane Grey, and encountering trouble at school while reading when he was supposed to be paying close attention to his religious studies. His time at a boarding school was funded by a family friend but he quit after two years. He attended a Congregation of Christian Brothers school in Tramore but quit that as well, at the age of 14. William Hollis Long II (born August 11, 1955) is an American politician who has served as the U.S. representative for Missouri's 7th congressional district since 2011. The district includes much of the southwestern quadrant of the state and is anchored in Springfield, Missouri, Springfield. It also includes Joplin, Missouri, Joplin and Branson, Missouri, Branson. William Douglas Long (born February 29, 1960) is a former American professional baseball pitcher who played from 1985 to 1991 for the Chicago White Sox (1985–1990), Chicago Cubs (1990) and Montreal Expos (1991). Early life Long was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and graduated from Moeller High School. He played college football at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Professional career Long was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 2nd round of the 1981 MLB amateur draft. Before the 1985 season, Long was traded by the San Diego Padres, along with Ozzie Guillén, Luis Salazar and Tim Lollar, to the White Sox, in the same deal that brought Cy Young Award winner LaMarr Hoyt to San Diego. Long played his first professional game on July 21, 1985, with the Chicago White Sox.
