Bill Hyndman
William Hyndman III (December 25, 1915 – September 6, 2001) was an American amateur golfer. Hyndman was born in Glenside, Pennsylvania. Hyndman won many amateur tournaments, over an almost 50-year span, including the U.S. Senior Amateur twice (1973 and 1983). He was runner-up in four major amateur tournaments, the 1955 U.S. Amateur and the 1959, 1969, and 1970 British Amateurs. He played on five Walker Cup teams (1957, 1959, 1961, 1969, 1971) and on the Eisenhower Trophy twice (1958, 1960). He defeated Jack Nicklaus in the 1959 British Amateur. Hyndman died Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania. Golf
Golf is a club-and-ball sport in which players use various clubs to hit balls into a series of holes on a course in as few strokes as possible. Golf, unlike most ball games, cannot and does not use a standardized playing area, and coping with the varied terrains encountered on different courses is a key part of the game. The Amateur Championship
The Amateur Championship (sometimes referred to as the British Amateur or British Amateur Championship outside the UK) is a golf tournament which has been held annually in the United Kingdom since 1885 except during the two World Wars, and in 1949 and 2019 when Ireland hosted the championship. It is one of the two leading individual tournaments for amateur golfers, alongside the U.S. Amateur. It normally has the widest international representation of any individual amateur event, with 38 golf federations from all six continents represented in the 2018 championship. Americas Cup (golf)
The Americas Cup was a biennial men's team golf tournament between teams of amateurs golfers from the United States, Canada and Mexico. It was held nine times between 1952 and 1967. The United States won all the matches except in 1965 when Canada won the cup. The matches followed on from an informal match that had been played in 1951 at Saucon Valley Country Club between teams from the United States and Canada. A trophy was donated by Jerome P. Bowes, Jr. The event was held in even-numbered years from 1952 to 1960 when there was no Walker Cup match. However from 1961 to 1967 it was held in odd-numbered years, to avoid clashing with the Eisenhower Trophy which started in 1958 and was held in even-numbered years. The venue cycled between the United States, Canada and Mexico. Until 1967 teams consisted of seven players, six of whom played in each session. 1960 Eisenhower Trophy
The 1960 Eisenhower Trophy took place September 28 to October 1 at the Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pennsylvania. It was the second World Amateur Team Championship for the Eisenhower Trophy. The tournament was a 72-hole stroke play team event with 32 four-man teams. The best three scores for each round counted towards the team total. United States won the Eisenhower Trophy, finishing 42 strokes ahead of the silver medalists, Australia. Great Britain and Ireland finished five strokes behind Australia and took the bronze medal while South Africa finished fourth. Jack Nicklaus completed the four rounds in 269, 13 strokes better than anyone else and 19 strokes better than the best non-American, Bruce Devlin. Teams 32 teams contested the event. 1958 Eisenhower Trophy
The 1958 Eisenhower Trophy took place 8–11 and 13 October on the Old Course in St Andrews, Scotland. It was the first World Amateur Team Championship for the Eisenhower Trophy. The tournament was a 72-hole stroke play team event with 29 four-man teams. The best three scores for each round counted towards the team total. Australia won the Eisenhower Trophy, beating the United States by 222 to 224 in a playoff after both teams had finished on 918. The United States took the silver medal. Great Britain and Ireland finished a stroke behind and took the bronze medal while New Zealand, who led after 54 holes, finished fourth. The playoff took place on Monday 13 October and followed the same format as the main event with the leading three scores counting. The 1971 Walker Cup, the 23rd Walker Cup Match, was played on 26 and 27 May 1971, on the Old Course at St Andrews, Scotland. The event was won by Great Britain & Ireland 13 to 11, their first win in the event since 1938. Although Great Britain and Ireland won all the first morning foursomes, the United States won six of the eight singles and held a one point lead after the first day. The United States lead increased to two points after the second day foursomes. The event was won by the United States 10 to 8 with 6 matches halved. The United States led by 4 points after the first day and, although Great Britain and Ireland won both the foursomes and singles sessions on the second day, the United States won by two points. Format The format for play on Friday and Saturday was the same. There were four matches of foursomes in the morning and eight singles matches in the afternoon. In all, 24 matches were played.
