Bill Hewitt (American Football)
William Ernest Hewitt (October 8, 1909 – January 14, 1947) was an American professional football player who was a defensive end and end in the National Football League (NFL). He played five seasons for the Chicago Bears (1932–1936), three for the Philadelphia Eagles (1937–1939), and one for the Phil-Pitt Steagles (1943). He is remembered for his refusal to wear a helmet as one of the last NFL players not to wear one.Lyons, 2010, p. 70. Hewitt played college football for the Michigan Wolverines, where he was named team's most valuable player and first-team All-Big Ten his senior season. In nine NFL seasons, he was named an All-Pro six times, won two NFL championships, and in 1934 led the league in touchdown receptions. His jersey number 56 is retired by the Bears and he is a member of the Philadelphia Eagles Hall of Fame. Hewitt was posthumously inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1971. William Severlyn Hewitt (born August 8, 1944) is a retired American professional basketball player. A 6'7" forward from the University of Southern California, Hewitt played six seasons (1968–1973;1974–1975) in the National Basketball Association as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers, Detroit Pistons, Buffalo Braves, and Chicago Bulls. William Douglas Hewitt (31 October 1930 – 23 November 2016) was an Australian politician. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Bill Hewitt did not have a happy childhood. His father was a World War I veteran who often told his children how he had seen 6,000 men killed in a day, which Hewitt said made him a "rather serious child". After completing primary school, he initially worked in Carricks Furniture Factory, which he hoped would lead to an apprenticeship, but didn't. Later, he worked as an office boy at Castlemaine Perkins and the company paid for him to study accounting at night school, after which he became an office manager and a business manager. Politics Hewitt joined the Liberal Party in 1950, becoming president of the Queensland Young Liberals. Foster William Alfred Hewitt (December 6, 1928 – December 25, 1996) was a Canadian radio and television sportscaster. He was the son of hockey broadcaster Foster Hewitt and the grandson of ''Toronto Star'' journalist W. A. Hewitt. Playing career Bill Hewitt played competitive football and hockey and competed in track & field while attending Upper Canada College in Toronto, Ontario. Sports broadcasting After graduation, Bill Hewitt took a broadcasting job at CJRL in Kenora, Ontario. He was then hired as sports director of CFOS in Owen Sound, Ontario, and later held the same title at CKBB in Barrie. In 1951, his father launched CKFH in Toronto at which the younger Hewitt became its sports director at age 23. In the mid-1950s, Hewitt began substituting on Toronto Maple Leafs hockey broadcasts when his father was given other assignments by the CBC, such as covering the Ice Hockey World Championships or Winter Olympics.
