Bill Gehling
William Gehling (born Kevin Gehling; 12 April 1951) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Richmond in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Playing career Achievements include winning the Morrish Medal (U/19 VFL Best & Fairest) in 1969 and the Richmond U/19 Goal Kicking in 1968. A Premiership team member with the Richmond Under 19's in 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970 and Reserves premiership team 1971 and 1973. Continually overlooked for senior selection despite solid form over numerous years, Bill was conscripted to the armed forces National Service scheme, effectively ending any further VFL career. Bill then returned to Victorian metro football leagues, where he achieved both personal and team success. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). During general play, players may position themselves anywhere on the field and use any part of their bodies to move the ball. The primary methods are kicking, handballing and running with the ball. Richmond Football Club
The Richmond Football Club, nicknamed the Tigers, is an Australian rules football team playing in the Australian Football League (AFL). Between its inception in the Melbourne suburb of Richmond in 1885 and 1907, the club competed in the Victorian Football Association (VFA), winning two premierships. Richmond joined the Victorian Football League (now known as the AFL) in 1908 and has since won 13 premierships, most recently in 2020. Richmond's headquarters and training facilities are located at its original home ground, the Punt Road Oval, which sits adjacent to the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), the club's playing home since 1965. The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. Through the AFL Commission, the AFL also serves as the sport's governing body and is responsible for controlling the laws of the game. Morrish Medal
The Morrish Medal is an Australian rules football award. Formerly awarded to the best and fairest player in the VFL Under-19 competition (known as the Thirds prior to 1959), since 1992 the award has been given to the best player in the Victorian Statewide Under-18 competition (presently known as the NAB League) The Morrish Medal was named in honour of Tom Morrish, a long-serving treasurer (1921–1967) of the VFL Reserve Grade. Tom was a member of the VFL Umpires Appointment Board from 1937 to 1964. He was previously a Collingwood delegate in the 2nd XVIII league and also became a Geelong delegate in the 2nd XVIII committee in 1937. Conscription in Australia, also called mandatory military service or National Service, has a controversial history dating back to the first years of nationhood. Military conscription was abolished by Australian law in 1972. Australia currently has provisions for conscription, only during times of war if it is authorised by the governor-general and approved within 90 days by both houses of Parliament, as outlined in Part IV of the Defence Act 1903. The Eastern Football Netball League (known previously as the Eastern Districts Football League and later the Eastern Football League) is an Australian rules football league, based in the eastern suburbs of metropolitan Melbourne.
