Bill Gaines (basketball)
William Roosevelt Gaines (born March 10, 1946) is a former basketball player who played the guard position. He starred at Henderson County Community College and East Texas State University before playing briefly with the Houston Mavericks in the American Basketball Association. Gaines attended James Madison High School in Dallas, Texas, where he played basketball and football alongside his brother Henry. After missing out most of his senior season following a football injury that required a surgery, he signed a letter of intent to play for the University of Wichita. He never played for Wichita and later started his college career at Henderson County CC in the National Junior College Athletic Association where he was twice All-Texas Eastern Conference and once Junior College All-American. The ''Longview News-Journal'' is the major newspaper printed in the City of Longview, Texas. Dating to 1871 under independent publishers, including James Hogg, later Texas governor, and Carl Estes, Longview civic figure, the publication was purchased by Cox Newspapers in the 1980s and sold by Cox to ASP Westward in 2009. Rich Dumas
Richard Wayne Dumas (April 21, 1944November 19, 1991) was an American basketball player. A 6'5" shooting guard, he starred at Northeastern State before playing professionally for the Houston Mavericks in the American Basketball Association. Early life Dumas was born in Oklahoma City but later moved to Kansas City where he attended Sumner High School. There he was the city's leading scorer during his senior season, scoring 408 points in 18 games. College career After spending two years at Independence Community College, where he led the Jayhawk Junior College Conference in scoring in 1966, Dumas joined Northeastern State University where he starred alongside future NBA player Charlie Paulk. On February 1, 1968, he set the schools single game scoring record when he scored 50 points in a 96–84 victory against John Brown University, breaking Bob Edwards record of 47 points from 1962. History ''The Lubbock Avalanche'' was founded in 1900 by John James Dillard and Thad Tubbs. According to Dillard, the name "Avalanche" was chosen due to his desire that the newspaper surprise the citizens of Lubbock. The newspaper was sold to James Lorenzo Dow in 1908. History Brownwood attorney William Harding Mayes purchased the weeklies ''Brownwood Bulletin'' in the 1886 and ''Brownwood Banner'' in the 1887, consolidating them into the ''Brownwood Banner-Bulletin''.
