William Dwyer (Irish Politician)
William James Dwyer (9 May 1887 – 10 May 1951) was an Irish politician and businessman. He was born 9 May 1887 in Cork city, second son among three sons and two daughters of Walter Dwyer of Sunday's Well, Cork, merchant and later director and managing director of Dwyer & Co., and Clare Dwyer (née Downing). He was educated at Presentation Brothers College, Cork; and Downside School, Somerset, England. On finishing school in 1905, he returned to Cork to join his fathers' company. It was founded by his grandfather in the nineteenth century, and had become a large concern involved in the manufacture of clothing for men and boys. His experience within the family business helped to educate him in all aspects of the manufacturing process, to the extent that he left the firm in 1913 and set up his own hosiery factory. Bill Dwyer (mobster)
William Vincent Dwyer (February 23, 1883 – December 10, 1946), known as "Big Bill" Dwyer, was an early Irish-American Prohibition gangster and bootlegger in New York during the 1920s. He used his profits to purchase sports properties, including the New York Americans and Pittsburgh Pirates of the National Hockey League (NHL), as well as the Brooklyn Dodgers of the National Football League. William Raphael Louis Dwyer, Jr. (January 29, 1907 – December 13, 1987), known as Bil Dwyer, was an American cartoonist and humorist. He was known for several newspaper comic strips in the 1930s and 1950s, including ''Dumb Dora'' and ''Sandy Hill'', as well as a series of humorous books of Southern slang published in the 1970s. Early life Dwyer was born in Ohio on January 29, 1907. The family lived in the Ohio towns of Portsmouth, Perrysburg and Paint when he was young. Dwyer attended Ohio State University around 1925, where he befriended fellow cartoonist Milton Caniff. Around this time, the two worked together at the ''Columbus Dispatch'' newspaper. Dwyer left Ohio State after only a few months to enroll in the Yale School of Art, in part to be closer to the New York publishing world. William Lee Dwyer (March 26, 1929 – February 12, 2002) was an American attorney and jurist who served as a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington. Early life and education Born in Olympia, Washington, Dwyer received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Washington in 1951 and a Bachelor of Laws from New York University School of Law in 1953. Career He served in the United States Army Judge Advocate General's Corps from 1953 to 1956, achieving the rank of lieutenant. He was a law clerk for the Washington Supreme Court in 1957, and was then in private practice in Seattle, Washington from 1957 to 1987. During his time in private practice, Dwyer was hired by then-Attorney General Slade Gorton to oversee a case against Major League Baseball following the loss of the Seattle Pilots. William Gerard Dwyer (born 1947) is an American mathematician specializing in algebraic topology and group theory. For many years he was a professor at the University of Notre Dame, where he is the William J. Hank Family Professor Emeritus. Life He was born in 1947 in Jersey City, New Jersey. Career Dwyer completed his B.A. at Boston College in 1969. He completed his Ph.D. at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1973. His doctoral thesis was on ''Strong Convergence of the Eilenberg-Moore Spectral Sequence'' and his doctoral advisor was Daniel Kan. Afterwards he taught at Yale University and visited the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey before joining the faculty at the University of Notre Dame.
