Bill Cahill (hurler)
William Cahill (1923 - 18th August 2001) was an Irish hurler who played for Kilkenny Championship clubs Graigue–Ballycallan and Slieverue. He was also a member of the Kilkenny senior hurling team and was full-forward on the 1947 All-Ireland Championship-winning team. Graigue GAA
Graigue GAA was a Gaelic Athletic Association club located in Graigue, County Kilkenny, Ireland. The club fielded teams in both Gaelic football and hurling. History Located in the Graigue area, on the Kilkenny-Tipperary border, the club had its first success in 1946 when it was awarded the Northern Kilkenny JHC title after an objection was upheld. The Kilkenny JHC was later claimed after a defeat of St Kieran's, Clogga in the final. This win secured senior status for Graigue for the first time. Within three years the club had reached the pinnacle of Kilkenny club hurling when Graigue won the Kilkenny SHC after a defeat of Tullaroan in the final. The club missed out on the Kilkenny SFC title after a defeat by Railyard in 1961. After a period of decline the club amalgamated with nearby Ballycallan in 1969 to form the Graigue-Ballycallan club. 1954 Kilkenny Senior Hurling Championship
The 1954 Kilkenny Senior Hurling Championship was the 60th staging of the Kilkenny Senior Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Kilkenny County Board. On 10 October 1954, Slieverue won the championship after a 6–05 to 4–03 defeat of Tullaroan in the final. It was their first ever championship title. It remains their only championship title. Slieverue Hurlers
Slieverue, officially Slieveroe, () is a village in South County Kilkenny, Republic of Ireland. It is located in the historical barony of Ida. Despite the name, the land is relatively low-lying and fertile. Slieverue's population, as of the 2016 census, was 476. Geography The village lies alongside the main N25 road, some 5 km from Waterford City and 14 km from New Ross in County Wexford, near the point where the Rivers Barrow and Suir come together. Landmarks A prominent local hill, known as Carriganurra, features a large concrete cross at its summit. This cross was erected by local residents in 1950 to celebrate the Holy Year. The Church of the Assumption is an early nineteenth century Roman Catholic church in Slieverue village. The only church in the parish, it was renovated in the early 1990s. Leinster Junior Hurling Championship
The Leinster Junior Hurling Championship is a junior "knockout" competition in the game of Hurling played in the province of Leinster in Ireland. The series of games are organised by the Leinster Council. The winners of the Leinster Junior Hurling Championship each year progress to play the other provincial champions for a chance to win the All-Ireland Junior Hurling Championship. Generally, the strong hurling counties have fielded their second team in this competition. In recent years though, they have participated in the Leinster Intermediate Hurling Championship instead. Since 2005, the competition has been suspended, with the counties participating in the Christy Ring Cup or Nicky Rackard Cup instead. All-Ireland Junior Hurling Championship
The All-Ireland Junior Hurling Championship was a hurling competition organized by the Gaelic Athletic Association in Ireland. The competition was originally contested by the second teams of the strong counties, and the first teams of the weaker counties. In the years from 1961 to 1973 and from 1997 until now, the strong counties have competed for the All-Ireland Intermediate Hurling Championship instead. The competition was then restricted to the weaker counties. The competition was discontinued after 2004 as these counties now compete for the Nicky Rackard Cup instead. From 1974 to 1982, the original format of the competition was abandoned, and the competition was incorporated in Division 3 of the National Hurling League. The original format, including the strong hurling counties was re-introduced in 1983. The Leinster GAA Hurling Senior Championship, known simply as the Leinster Championship, is an annual inter-county hurling competition organised by the Leinster Council of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). It is the highest inter-county hurling competition in the province of Leinster, and has been contested every year since the 1888 championship. The final, usually held on the first Sunday in July, serves as the culmination of a series of games played during May and June, and the results determine which team receives the Bob O'Keeffe Cup.
