Bill Bushell
William Joseph 'Joe' Bushell (3 March 1888 – 5 February 1951) was an Australian rules footballer who played with St Kilda in the Victorian Football League (VFL), Sturt in the South Australian Football League (SAFL) as well as both North Fremantle and Subiaco in the West Australian Football League (WAFL). Bushell, a defender, started his career at North Fremantle. He was part of the Western Australian squad which competed in the 1908 Melbourne Carnival, however he was not selected to play. While away, Bushell was recruited to Sturt by their secretary and he spent 1908 playing with the club, in South Australia. 1908 Melbourne Carnival
The 1908 Melbourne Carnival was the inaugural Australian National Football Carnival, an Australian rules football interstate competition, held in Melbourne in August 1908. It was known at the time as the Jubilee Australasian Football Carnival because it was designed to commemorate 50 years of Australian rules football. It was the first time in which all Australian states and New Zealand had competed together in the sport. The winning team was presented with a silk pennant; and each member of the winning team received a gold championship medal. Although the 29 August final between Victoria and Western Australia was played in front of something like 15,000 spectators, it is certain that the crowd would have been considerably larger if it had not also been the first day of the American Fleet's eight-day visit to Melbourne. The 1910 VFL season was the 14th season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured ten clubs, ran from 30 April until 1 October, and comprised an 18-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top four clubs. The premiership was won by the Collingwood Football Club for the third time, after it defeated by 14 points in the 1910 VFL Grand Final.
