''Bill Brand'' is a British television drama series produced by Thames Television for the ITV network which was shown in the summer of 1976. Written by Trevor Griffiths, the series charts the political progress of the eponymous Brand, who becomes a Labour Party member of parliament for a Lancashire constituency after retaining the seat at a by-election with a small majority. A former Liberal Studies lecturer at a local Technical college, Brand finds the demands of his career at odds with his left-wing convictions. Produced as one series of eleven episodes, ''Bill Brand'' stars Jack Shepherd in the title role. Arthur Lowe appeared as the Prime Minister, Arthur Watson (a character loosely based on Harold Wilson). Bill Brand (born 1949, in Rochester, New York) is an experimental film and video artist, educator, activist and film preservationist. Life and career Brand's films and videos were first shown at Anthology Film Archives in New York City in 1973. They have since been screened in the United States and around the world in museums, independent film showcases, colleges and universities, and on television. They have been featured at major film festivals including the Berlin International Film Festival, New Directors/New Films Festival, Tribeca Film Festival and Rotterdam Film Festival. Masstransiscope In 1980 Brand completed a permanent public art project, ''Masstransiscope'', a mural installed in the subway tunnel of New York City that is animated by the movement of passing trains.
