Bill Andrews (unionist)
William Henry Andrews (20 April 1870 – 26 December 1950) was the first chairman of the South African Labour Party (SALP) and the first General Secretary of the Communist Party of South Africa. He was also active in the formation of the Industrial and Commercial Workers' Union. Biography Born in Leiston Suffolk, to Francis Andrews, a fitter, and Sarah Hannah Belmoor. Andrews left school in 1883 and was apprenticed as a fitter and turner. He joined the Amalgamated Society of Engineers in 1890. In 1891 he became a journeyman fitter and turner. He travelled to Johannesburg in 1893, holding jobs on gold mines in the West Rand until the 1899. With the beginning of Second Boer War in 1899, Andrews and his family returned to Britain but returned to the Cape in 1900. He joined the British forces for six months before joining the Imperial Military Railways. Bill Andrews (cricketer)
William Harry Russell Andrews (14 April 1908 in Swindon, Wiltshire – 9 January 1989 in Worlebury, Weston-super-Mare, Somerset) was an English cricketer who played for Somerset. He was a right-arm fast-medium pace bowler and useful middle-order right-handed batsman. He played 226 matches for Somerset between 1930 and 1947 and took 750 wickets at an average of 23.38 and scored 4,833 runs at an average of 15.59. Andrews was a tall man (6 ft 3in) with a high arm action, often referred to as "12 o'clock high". He kept a good length and generally bowled in swingers to right-handed batsmen. He claimed his high action was modelled on Ted McDonald. Although he was sacked four times by Somerset, twice as a player and twice as a coach, he put much of his life into the club as player, coach and later on committees and as a supporter. Bill Andrews (1944-2017) was a surfer, documentary photographer/videographer, and archivist. During his daily reportage of modern surf culture, Andrews archived over 20,000 surf-related photographs and videos. His work can be seen on the online chronicl"A Day with BA"and oyoutube Andrews grew up surfing in La Jolla, California. He caught his first wave in 1957 at La Jolla Shores Beach. By the early sixties, he had joined the line-up at Windansea Beach, and with other local surfers, he helped establish Black's Beach as a world class break. The Surfer's Journal calls Andrews the “first Black’s local”, a considerable accomplishment given the difficult trail or long paddle to access Black's Beach at that time.
