Burdwan Medical College is a public hospital and medical research institute located in the town of Burdwan, Purba Bardhaman, West Bengal. Burdwan Medical College was established in 1910 by Governor of Bengal and was undertaken by the University of Burdwan in 1969 as Burdwan University Medical College. Later it was taken over by the government of West Bengal on 4 August 1976, and rechristened Burdwan Medical College. The campus is spread over approximately . It is one of the oldest medical college to teach Western medicine in Asia and the first institute to teach in English language in Burdwan. Bardhaman (, ) is a city and a municipality in the state of West Bengal, India. It is the headquarters of Purba Bardhaman district, having become a district capital during the period of British rule. Burdwan, an alternative name for the city, has remained in use since then. Etymology The history of Burdwan is known from about 5000 BC (the Mesolithic or Late Stone Age).
