Big Wave Surfing
Big wave surfing is a discipline within surfing in which surfers paddle into, or are towed into, waves that are at least 20 feet (6.2 m) high, on surf boards known as "guns" or towboards. The size of the board needed to successfully surf these waves varies by the size of the wave, as well as the technique the surfer uses to reach it. A larger, longer board enables a rider to paddle fast enough to catch the wave and has the advantage of being more stable, but it also limits maneuverability and surfing speed. In 1992, big wave surfers such as Buzzy Kerbox, Laird Hamilton and Darrick Doerner introduced a cross-over variation called tow-in surfing. Justine Dupont (born 27 July 1991) is a French professional surfer. Personal life Justine Dupont was born in Bordeaux, France. She began surfing at the age of 11. Laura Enever (born 14 November 1991) is an Australian professional surfer. Enever was the ASP Women's World Junior Champion in 2009. She made her professional debut in 2011. As of March 2015, Enever competes at the highest level of professional surfing, touring with the World Surf League. Praia do Norte (‘North Beach’) is a beach located in Nazaré, portuguese Oeste region, which due to its giant white breaking waves is famed for its surfing conditions. Garrett "GMAC" McNamara (born August 10, 1967) is an American professional big wave surfer best known for setting the world record for largest wave ever surfed, as documented in the HBO series '' 100 Foot Wave''. McNamara is also known for successfully negotiating a monstrous barrel at Jaws and being the first person to ride a wave formed from calving glaciers. Patrick Shane Dorian (born July 19, 1972), or "Shane", is an American surfer from Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. He spent 11 years touring on the World Championship Tour as a professional surfer. Dorian quit competition surfing in 2003 to focus on big waves. He is currently a big wave surfer and one of the best in the world at big wave riding.
