Big Trails, Wyoming
Big Trails is an unincorporated place in the eastern part of Washakie County in north-central Wyoming. Wyoming Highway 434 leads north 21 miles to Ten Sleep, and south over mountains to Lost Cabin, Lysite, and Moneta. Barnum and Mayoworth are the nearest places to the east across the Bighorn range. History The Ainsworth House, built in 1886, is on the National Register of Historic Places. Geography Big Trails lies in the Big Horn Basin on the northwest side of a mountain ridge. It is near the confluence of the eastern part of the Owl Creek Mountains and the southern part of the Bighorn Mountains. The southern Bighorns have a fault named ''Big Trails Fault'' and there is some seismic activity in the area. Bighorn Mountains
The Bighorn Mountains ( cro, Basawaxaawúua, lit=our mountains or cro, Iisaxpúatahchee Isawaxaawúua, label=none, lit=bighorn sheep's mountains) are a mountain range in northern Wyoming and southern Montana in the United States, forming a northwest-trending spur from the Rocky Mountains extending approximately northward on the Great Plains. Owl Creek Mountains
The Owl Creek Mountains are a subrange of the Rocky Mountains in central Wyoming in the United States, running east to west to form a bridge between the Absaroka Range to the northwest and the Bridger Mountains to the east. The range forms the boundary between the Bighorn Basin to the north and the Shoshone Basin to the south. Big Horn Basin
The Bighorn Basin is a plateau region and intermontane basin, approximately 100 miles (160 km) wide, in north-central Wyoming in the United States. It is bounded by the Absaroka Range on the west, the Pryor Mountains on the north, the Bighorn Mountains on the east, and the Owl Creek Mountains and Bridger Mountains on the south. It is drained to the north by tributaries of the Bighorn River, which enters the basin from the south, through a gap between the Owl Creek and Bridger Mountains, as the Wind River, and becomes the Bighorn as it enters the basin. Ainsworth House (Big Trails, Wyoming)
The Ainsworth House, also known as the Greet Ranch, was built in 1886 by homesteader Frank S. Ainsworth and his wife in Big Trails, Wyoming, in the Nowood Valley of Washakie County. The Ainsworths built the frame house after living in a tent and a log dugout. The house was one of the first permanent habitations to be built in the Bighorn Basin. The 1886 section of the house is a 1½ story framed and clapboarded building, to which was appended a 1½ story log house built in 1890 and expanded upward in 1911. Ainsworth was born in Iowa in 1857. He went west to Denver, then hunted and trapped in northwestern Colorado. By 1879 he was trapping in the Bighorn Basin. In 1885 he returned to Iowa to marry Lucy Ann Albee and brought her back to the Bighorn Basin where they built their house. Mayoworth is an unincorporated place in the southwestern part of Johnson County in north-central Wyoming, United States. It lies in the eastern valleys of the Bighorn Mountains. Mayoworth is at the western terminus of Wyoming Highway 191, approximately 12 miles west of the Kaycee exit off Interstate 25 (with U.S. Route 87). Barnum is an unincorporated place in the southwestern part of Johnson County in north-central Wyoming, United States. It lies in the eastern valleys of the Bighorn Mountains.
