Big Pines, California
Big Pines is an unincorporated community in Los Angeles County, California, United States. It is in the Angeles National Forest, San Gabriel Mountains. Geography The community is located in the Swarthout Valley, which was first settled in 1851. It is bordered on the east by the San Bernardino County line and the town of Wrightwood. It is the highest elevation settlement located on the San Andreas Fault. To the west of Big Pines is Jackson Lake, a sag pond located on the San Andreas Fault. The lake is home to many recreational activities. Recreation Big Pines began as a year-round recreation area built by Los Angeles County in 1924. It is a popular ski area close to Los Angeles, as it has a history of significant snowfall, even as late as May. The Mountain High Ski Resort and the Table Mountain Observatory are located in Big Pines. Wrightwood
Wrightwood is a census-designated place in San Bernardino County, California. It sits at an elevation of . The population was 4,525 at the 2010 census, up from the population of 3,837 at the 2000 census. Wrightwood is located northeast of Los Angeles. Wrightwood is on the Pacific Crest Trail. History Located in a pine-covered valley in the San Gabriel Mountains, the Wrightwood area was first developed as cattle ranches in the 19th century by Nathan and Truman Swarthout. Table Mountain Observatory
Table Mountain Observatory (TMO) is an astronomical observation facility operated by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (California Institute of Technology). It is located in Big Pines, California, in Angeles National Forest near Wrightwood, north-northeast of Los Angeles, California, in the United States. TMO is part of JPL's Table Mountain Facility (TMF). The larger site hosts a number of non-astronomical projects. Mountain High resort is a winter resort in the San Gabriel Mountains in Los Angeles County in California. Mountain High is one of the most-visited resorts in Southern California.
