Big Brown (horse)
Big Brown (foaled April 10, 2005, in Kentucky) is a Champion American Thoroughbred racehorse who won the 2008 Kentucky Derby and 2008 Preakness Stakes and was the 2008 Champion Three-Year-Old. Background Big Brown was bred by Dr. Gary B. Knapp's Monticule Farms in Lexington, Kentucky. He was sired by Grade III winner Boundary, a son of North American Champion sire Danzig, who was a son of Northern Dancer. Big Brown's dam was Mien, also a granddaughter of Northern Dancer through her sire, Nureyev. Big Brown was first sold for $60,000 at the Fasig-Tipton 2006 Fall Yearling Sale. He was then sold again at the Keeneland Sales 2007 April Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale to Brooklyn trucking company owner Paul Pompa, Jr. for $190,000. Pompa named the colt in honor of the United Parcel Service (UPS), popularly nicknamed Big Brown. Pompa turned him over to trainer Patrick Reynolds for race conditioning. The big brown bat (''Eptesicus fuscus'') is a species of vesper bat distributed widely throughout North America, the Caribbean, and the northern portion of South America. It was first described as a species in 1796. Compared to other microbats, the big brown bat is relatively large, weighing and possessing a wingspan of . Big brown bats are insectivorous, consuming a diverse array of insects, particularly night-flying insects, but especially beetles. Some of the beetles it consumes are serious agricultural pests, including cucumber beetles. They are nocturnal, foraging for prey at night and roosting in sheltered areas during the day such as caves, tunnels, tree cavities, and human structures. Big Brown Box was an online retailer of audio visual products, based in Sydney, Australia. It was a subsidiary of Winning Appliances and Appliances Online until 2015 when it was merged with Appliances Online. History An online retail site trading as Big Brown Box was launched by Thorn Group Limited (owners of brands including Radio Rentals and Rentlo) in November 2008. It offered whitegoods, small appliances and electronic products. The site allowed customers to order goods online with Radio Rentals stores facilitating delivery and service of the goods. Big Brown (poet)
William Clifford Brown (September 30, 1920 – August 30, 1980), who went by the name Big Brown, was a mid-twentieth century American street poet, performer, and recording artist. Prominent among the Beats in New York City from the late 1950s to the late 1960s, his distinctive language and style influenced a number of artists and musicians, including Bob Dylan, who declared Brown's to be the best poetry he had ever heard. Brown also influenced the later genres of hip hop and rap. In 1973, after moving to California, he recorded an album, ''The First Man of Poetry, Big Brown: Between Heaven and Hell'', produced by Rudy Ray Moore. Brown was murdered in Los Angeles seven years later. In 2015, he was the subject of a three-part series on ''The New Yorker Radio Hour'', "The Search for Big Brown."
