Based on the worldwide Big Brother (franchise), franchise of the same name, it saw fifteen HouseGuests competing to win the show's grand prize. It is the first English adaption of the series to be held in Canada, although all seasons of the Big Brother (American TV series), North American edition have been broadcast in the country. Hosted by Arisa Cox, the show revolved around fourteen contestants (known as HouseGuests), who volunteered to reside in a house while being constantly filmed without any communication with the outside world as they compete to win a grand prize of CA$100,000. The season concluded on May 6, 2021 after 69 days of competition. It was won by urban planner Tychon Carter-Newman, who defeated anthropology student Breydon White in a 6-1 jury vote. ''Big Brother'' is an American television reality competition show based on the original Dutch reality show of the same name created by producer John de Mol in 1997. The series takes its name from the character in George Orwell's 1949 novel ''Nineteen Eighty-Four.'' ''Big Brother Canada 5'' is the fifth season of the Canadian reality television series ''Big Brother Canada''. It is based upon the Dutch series of the same name, which gained notoriety in 1999 and 2000. It was produced by Endemol USA, and Insight Productions. The season premiered on Global on March 15, 2017. This season of the series saw 8 new HouseGuest compete against 8 HouseGuests from the prior edition who are deemed to need a second chance. The first incarnation of E!, also referred to as E! Entertainment Television, was a Canadian English language privately owned television system that existed from 2001 to 2009 under the ownership of Canwest. ''Loft Story'' was a French reality show, and it is the first French adaptation of ''Big Brother'' franchise. The show generally considered is the first of its kind in France. ''Loft Story'' presented by Benjamin Castaldi and broadcast on M6 from 26 April 2001 to 5 July 2001 for the first season and from 11 April 2002 to 4 July 2002 for the second season. The French title of the show is a play-on-words on ''loft'' because the contestants are "locked up" in a loft during their adventure, and ''Love Story''. The initial ''Loft Story'' inspired the creation of a similar show of the same name in Quebec. The famous eye logo is used by both ''Loft Story'' versions. It evokes the voyeuristic eye of the television viewer as she or he watches the ''Lofteurs'' live in front of the cameras. ''Loft Story'' is a Quebec television series broadcast on the TQS television network, and was an adaptation of the show ''Loft Story'' in France, which itself was an adaptation of the ''Big Brother'' franchise. TQS became V and replaced ''Loft Story'' with a new ''Big Brother'' series for Quebec in 2010. During the first season (2003), the show had TVA's ''Occupation Double'' as its main competitor, and was a success in terms of viewership, but was not as financially successful as the French version. Therefore, the program was discontinued the following season but was resurrected three years later in January 2006. In response to criticism of year 1, year 2 toned down the sexual content and replaced it with daily games and truth/dare events.
