The purpose of the Big Brother Awards is to draw attention to the violations of privacy that have occurred in society. In year 2008 there were awards in three categories: personal, the government and private sector organization. In Finland, together with Big Brother Awards, there is also a positive nomination that is named after Winston Smith from George Orwell's book Nineteen Eighty-Four. Privacy International
Privacy International (PI) is a UK-based registered charity that defends and promotes the right to privacy across the world. First formed in 1990, registered as a non-profit company in 2002 and as a charity in 2012, PI is based in London. Its current executive director, since 2012, is Dr Gus Hosein. Formation, background and objectives During 1990, in response to increasing awareness about the globalization of surveillance, more than a hundred privacy experts and human rights organizations from forty countries took steps to form an international organization for the protection of privacy. Big Brother Awards
The Big Brother Awards (BBAs) recognize "the government and private sector organizations ... which have done the most to threaten personal privacy". They are named after the George Orwell character Big Brother from the novel ''Nineteen Eighty-Four''. They are awarded yearly to authorities, companies, organizations, and persons that have been acting particularly and consistently to threaten or violate people's privacy, or disclosed people's personal data to third parties. The awards are intended to draw public attention to privacy issues and related alarming trends in society, especially in data privacy. The contest is organized by loose coalition of nongovernmental organizations, including Iuridicum Remedium, Privacy International, and others, although some national-level BBAs are organized by specific sponsors. Electronic Frontier Finland
Electronic Frontier Finland – Effi ry (Effi) is a Finnish on-line civil rights organization founded in 2001 by Herkko Hietanen, Ville Oksanen and Mikko Välimäki. It had about 1,600 members at the end of 2014. While not formally affiliated with the U.S.-based Electronic Frontier Foundation, the two organizations share many of their goals. Effi is a member of the Global Internet Liberty Campaign and a founding member of European Digital Rights (EDRi). Effi's stated aim is to protect and promote freedom of speech and privacy on the Internet as well as in Finnish society in general. Among other things, Effi has lobbied for effective anti-spam legislation and against software patents. George Orwell

Privacy engineering is an emerging field of engineering which aims to provide methodologies, tools, and techniques to ensure systems provide acceptable levels of privacy.
