Big Beat (film)
''Big Beat'' ( cz, Šakalí léta) is a 1993 Czech musical comedy directed by Jan Hřebejk. It is set in 1959 in Prague's Hotel International. The film was Hřebejk's breakthrough box-office hit and the first feature film made by Hřebejk and Petr Jarchovsky as a directing-writing team. Jarchovsky wrote the script based on a story by Petr Šabach. The music and lyrics were written for the film by singer-songwriter Ivan Hlas, and veteran cameraman Jan Malir also worked on the film. The film won four Czech Lion awards, including Best Film of 1993, Best Director (Hřebejk), Best Actor ( Josef Abrhám) and Best Original Score. Plot The film is set in 1959 in and around the Hotel International. A young man calling himself "Baby" ( Martin Dejdar) arrives at the home of Prokop ( Josef Abrhám) and his family, ostensibly to care for their mutual elderly relative. Jan Hřebejk
Jan Hřebejk (; born 27 June 1967) is a Czechs, Czech film director and actor. Life and career Born in Prague, Hřebejk graduated from high school in 1987 and continued his studies at the Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (FAMU) from 1987 to 1991, majoring in screenplay and dramaturgy. He was at FAMU alongside Petr Jarchovský, who is also his classmate from high school and subsequently a frequent collaborator as a screenwriter. While at FAMU, Hřebejk directed and produced two short films, ''Co všechno chcete vědět o sexu a bojíte se to prožít'' (1988) and ''L. P. 1948'' (1989), from scripts written by his classmate Petr Zelenka (director), Petr Zelenka. His professional directorial debut was a short film for Czech TV, ''Nedělejte nic, pokud k tomu nemáte vážný důvod'' (1991), also written by Zelenka. Raoul Marian Kristian Schránil (24 March 1910 – 20 September 1998) was a Czech film actor. Life Schránil was born in Most on 24 March 1910. His father Rudolf Schránil was a government secretary. His mother Alexandra Poláková was a singer. Shortly after his birth he moved to Vienna with his parents. During the World War I he was sent to live with his grandmother in Chotětov. After the war his family moved to Prague. His family friend was an opera singer Emmy Destinn. Schránil was expelled from high school in Prague and went to study in Germany and later in Dijon, France. Václav Chalupa Jr. (born 7 December 1967 in Jindřichův Hradec, Czechoslovakia) is a Czech rower who competed at six consecutive Olympics from 1988 to 2008, winning a silver medal in 1992 behind Thomas Lange in the single scull. Career His first coach was his father Václav Chalupa Sr., who competed at the 1960 and 1964 Olympics and reestablished the only rowing club in their small town when he was thirteen. From 1989 until 2004 he was coached by Zdeněk Pecka. He rowed at sixteen world championships. Saša Rašilov (born Alexandr Rašilov, 26 July 1972) is a Czech film and stage actor. He studied at the Faculty of Theatre in Prague, later performing on stage at theatres including the Theatre on the Balustrade.
