Bietigheim Horse Market
The Bietigheim Horse Market is a well-known supra-regional Volksfest (beer festival and travelling funfair) in Bietigheim-Bissingen which takes place directly under the Bietigheim Enz Valley Bridge. It attracts several hundred thousand visitors every year. Despite this large crowd of visitors, however, the festival has retained the charm of a local festival. The Bietigheim Horse Market begins on the Friday before the first Monday in September and ends the following Tuesday. Besides the traditional horse market on Monday, a riding and horse-jumping tournament is held from Friday until Sunday, and other riding demonstrations and a procession and subsequent concours d'elegance on the Monday. There is also an entertainment park with marquees, and a large market and fireworks after nightfall on the Sunday. Volksfest
A Volksfest ( ; German for "people's festival")Cognate of "folk festival" in English is a large event in German-speaking countries which usually combines a beer festival or wine festival and a travelling funfair. Attractions may include amusement rides, games of chance and skill, and food and merchandise vendors. When there is a beer festival, it is common to build one or more beer tents (), usually sponsored by a brewery, and set up beer gardens where it is possible to order traditional food and try the (beer specially brewed for the season). A large beer tent will have hundreds of wooden benches with a seating capacity in the thousands and offer live music, being a favourite place for patrons to spend the evening. Travelling Funfair
A traveling carnival (US English), usually simply called a carnival, or travelling funfair (UK English), is an amusement show that may be made up of amusement rides, food vendors, merchandise vendors, games of chance and skill, thrill acts, and animal acts. Bietigheim-Bissingen
Bietigheim-Bissingen (locally: ''Biedge-Bissenge'') is the second-largest town in the district of Ludwigsburg, Baden-Württemberg, Germany with 42,515 inhabitants in 2007. It is situated on the river Enz and the river Metter, close to its confluence with the Neckar, about 19 km north of Stuttgart, and 20 km south of Heilbronn. History Towards the end of the 18th century Bietigheim saw during the beginning of the industrialisation an improvement of the living conditions and an increase in population. The 1806 furnished Oberamt Bietigheim was in 1810, however, dissolved again: the city and its official municipalities were integrated in the Oberamt Besigheim. Bietigheim Enz Valley Bridge
The Bietigheim Viaduct is a well-known German railway bridge over the Enz valley at Bietigheim-Bissingen and one of the landmarks of the city. Construction began in 1851 and completion occurred on 20 September 1853 under the direction of Karl Etzel as part of the Western Railway between Bietigheim and Bruchsal. The Bietigheim Viaduct is a bricked stone construction with two rows of arches. The viaduct is approximately 287 metres long, approximately 33 metres high and has 21 arches, which extend over the Enz valley. Six arches were destroyed at the end of the Second World War; after that an auxiliary bridge, which was opened on 1 August 1945 was erected beside it, some foundations of which are still visible. The damaged columns were later restored, although one of the arches had to be completely filled with concrete.
