Biddle Family
The Biddle family of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is an Old Philadelphian family descended from English immigrants William Biddle (1630–1712) and Sarah Kempe (1634–1709), who arrived in the Province of New Jersey in 1681. Quakers, they had emigrated from England in part to escape religious persecution. Having acquired extensive rights to more than of lands in West Jersey, they settled first at Burlington, a city which developed along the east side of the Delaware River. William Biddle, 3rd (1698–1756), and John Biddle (1707–1789), two third-generation brothers, moved from Mount Hope (1684) near Bordentown, also on the east side of the Delaware, to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the 1720s and 1730s. They constituted the first generation of the Philadelphia Biddle family, which became involved in the business, political and cultural life of Pennsylvania and the United States. Biddle Motor Car Company
The Biddle Motor Car Company manufactured luxury automobiles in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from 1915 to 1922. "Information, rather than Persuasive Sales Talk" was the advertising slogan of the company, which was noted for its conservative advertising. The company produced six models, with the heaviest weighing 2,950 pounds with a four-cylinder engine being sold for $3475. The company was incorporated in October 1915 and presented finished automobiles at the Philadelphia Auto Show in January 1916. It was namesake of the Biddle family, although R. Ralston Biddle did not seem to have a major role beyond lending the name. Car was an assembled car manufactured in Philadelphia. The first bodies were believed to be from the Fleetwood body company in Fleetwood, Pennsylvania. Biddle, Montana
Biddle is a village in southeastern Powder River County, Montana, United States, near the Little Powder River. It lies along Highway 59, south of the town of Broadus, the county seat of Powder River County. The post office was established in 1916 with Charles Schofield as postmaster. It was later taken over by Roland Rumph and in 2010 the post office was built and currently ran by USPS. The town name came from S. F. B. Biddle, former owner of the large Cross Ranch, now currently owned by Nathan and Connie Rumph. Demographics As of 2020, the current estimated population of Biddle is 28. Biddle Island (Indiana)
Biddle Island is located in the Wabash River, in downtown Logansport, Indiana, just east of the merger of the Eel River and the Wabash. State Route 329 (Burlington Avenue) crosses the island to south bank of the Wabash. There are about twenty private residents on the island, which is about 17 acres. The island was named for its former owner Horace P. Biddle, a local judge and poet. Biddle's home on the island was a large house built by John Tipton. The house was razed in 1961. Management practices and the variation in the soils has resulted in the watercourses supporting a wide range of aquatic plant communities. Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU) is a private historically black university in Charlotte, North Carolina. It is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA) and accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The university awards Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Social Work, and Master of Social Work degrees. History Johnson C. Smith University was established on April 7, 1867, as the Biddle Memorial Institute at a meeting of the Catawba Presbytery in the old Charlotte Presbyterian Church. Mary D. Biddle, a churchwoman, donated $1,400 to the school. In appreciation of this first contribution, friends requested that Mrs. Biddle name the newly established school; she did so in the name of her late husband, Captain Henry Jonathan Biddle, who had been mortally wounded during the Battle of Glendale in 1862.
