History Of Alberta
The province of Alberta, Canada, has a history and prehistory stretching back thousands of years. The ancestors of today's First Nations in Alberta arrived in the area by at least 10,000 BC, according to the Bering land bridge theory. Southerly tribes, the Plain Indians, such as the Blackfoot, Blood, and Peigans eventually adapted to seminomadic plains bison hunting, originally without the aid of horses, but later with horses that Europeans had introduced. Recorded or written history begins with the arrival of Europeans. The rich soil was ideal for growing wheat and the vast prairie grasslands were great for raising cattle. The coming of the railways in the late 19th century led a to large-scale migration of farmers and cattleman from Eastern Canada, the United States, and Europe. Historica Canada is a Canadian charitable organization dedicated to promoting the country's history and citizenship. All of its programs are offered bilingually and reach more than 28 million Canadians annually. A registered national charitable organization, Historica Canada was originally established as the Historica-Dominion Institute following a 2009 merger of two existing groups—the Historica Foundation of Canada and The Dominion Institute—and changed to its present name in September 2013. Canada's History
''Canada's History'' () is the official magazine of Canada's National History Society. It is published six times a year and aims to foster greater popular interest in Canadian history. Founded as ''The Beaver'' in 1920 by the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC), the magazine was acquired by the Society in 1994. It remains partially funded by HBC and the Government of Canada. Subject matter includes all aspects of Canadian history. In 2011, it was named a finalist for "Magazine of the Year" at the National Magazine Awards. The youth edition of the magazine is called ''Kayak: Canada’s History Magazine for Kids'' (). History ''The Beaver'' was founded in 1920 as part of the Hudson's Bay Company's 250th anniversary celebrations. Ernest Mardon
Ernest George Mardon (1928 – 6 March 2016) was an English professor who worked at the University of Lethbridge. He has several dozen books, mostly on the history of Alberta, Canada. Born in Houston, Texas in 1928 to Professor Austin Mardon and Marie Dickey, Dr. Ernest G. Mardon was educated at Gordonstoun, Scotland, before attending Trinity College in Dublin. After that he was called up for military service in the Korean War as an officer with the Gordon Highlanders,Biographical note in "The Mormon Contribution to Alberta Politics," Golden Meteorite Press, Edmonton, Alberta, 2011 serving with that outfit in the Suez Canal Zone, Cyprus, Libya, from 1952 to 1954. He was honorably discharged with the rank of lieutenant. He moved to Canada in 1954 as Bureau Manager for United Press International. Austin Mardon
Austin Albert Mardon, Ph.D. (born 25 June 1962) is an author, community leader, and advocate for mental health. He is an assistant adjunct professor at the John Dossetor Health Ethics Centre at the University of Alberta. In the mid 80's, he founded and today still directs the Antarctic Institute of Canada, a non-profit entity based in Edmonton, Alberta. He is currently married to lawyer and activist Catherine Mardon, and has co-written several books with her. Biography Family history Mardon's paternal grandfather, Austin Mardon, attended Cambridge University prior to becoming a professor in comparative classics and history. With his wife, Marie, Mardon's grandfather purchased Ardross Castle in Scotland, which remained in the Mardon family until 1983. Bibliography (from and ), as a discipline, is traditionally the academic study of books as physical, cultural objects; in this sense, it is also known as bibliology (from ). English author and bibliographer John Carter describes ''bibliography'' as a word having two senses: one, a list of books for further study or of works consulted by an author (or enumerative bibliography); the other one, applicable for collectors, is "the study of books as physical objects" and "the systematic description of books as objects" (or descriptive bibliography). Etymology The word was used by Greek writers in the first three centuries CE to mean the copying of books by hand.
