Bibliography Of Encyclopedias
This is intended to be as comprehensive as possible list of encyclopedias and encyclopedic/biographical dictionaries ever published in any language. The list will not include reprinted editions but it is intended to list an alphabetical bibliography by theme and language to anything which resembles an A–Z encyclopedia or encyclopedic dictionary, both print and online. Entries are in the English language unless specifically stated as otherwise. Several entries may overlap and be listed under several different topics. Pierre Mouchon
Pierre Mouchon (30 July 1733 – 20 August 1797) was an 18th-century Genevan pastor, best remembered for being the author of the ''Table analytique et raisonnée...'' (index) of the ''Encyclopédie'' by Diderot and D'Alembert. Biography The son of a watchmaker, Minister of the French cult in Basel (1766) and Geneva (1788), keen on mathematics and astronomy, known to Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Pierre Mouchon undertook from 1774 to 1775, the development of what would become the ''Table analytique et raisonnée des matières contenues dans les XXXIII volumes in-folio du Dictionnaire des sciences, des arts et des métiers'' published in two volumes in 1780, in Paris by Charles-Joseph Panckoucke and in Amsterdam, by Marc-Michel Rey, the two co publishers of the '' Supplément à l'Encyclopédie''. Den Store Danske Encyklopædi
''Den Store Danske Encyklopædi'' (''The Great Danish Encyclopedia'') is the most comprehensive contemporary Danish language encyclopedia. The 20 volumes of the encyclopedia were published successively between 1994 and 2001; a one-volume supplement was published in 2002 and two index volumes in 2003. The work comprises 115,000 articles, ranging in size from single-line cross references to the 130-page entry on Denmark. The articles were written by a staff of about 4,000 academic experts led by editor-in-chief Jørn Lund. Articles longer than a few dozen lines are signed by their authors. Many articles are illustrated. Bivouac Mountain Encyclopedia
The Canadian Mountain Encyclopedia is an organization based in Vancouver, British Columbia founded in 1995 to provide information on Canada's mountains, backroads and trails. It is aimed at hikers and mountaineers, a similar audience to the Canadian Alpine Journal or a guidebook. The articles are supported by a GIS database and mapping system. The organization maintains a structured database of mountains for all Canada with access trails and backroads. The online reference database has about 30,000 mountains, 4000 backroads and 3000 trails. The initial core of the website was the mountain, road and trail databases. In 2009, a project was begun to upgrade the road and trail database, taking advantage of the newer air photos currently available via Google Earth. This has resulted in numerous corrections to previous data based on government maps. ''Banglapedia:'' ''the'' ''National Encyclopedia of Bangladesh'' is the first Bangladeshi encyclopedia. It is available in print, CD-ROM format and online, in both Bengali and English. The print version comprises fourteen 500-page volumes. The first edition was published in January 2003 in ten volumes by the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh, with a plan to update it every two years. The second edition was issued in 2012 in fourteen volumes. ''Banglapedia'' was not designed as a general encyclopedia but as a specialized encyclopedia on Bangladesh-related topics. For the encyclopedia's purposes, Bangladesh is defined as the territory comprising ancient Eastern India, Bengal Sultanate, Bengal Subah, Bengal Presidency, East Bengal, East Pakistan, and the independent Bangladesh, in historical succession. The ''World Book Encyclopedia'' is an American encyclopedia. The encyclopedia is designed to cover major areas of knowledge uniformly, but it shows particular strength in scientific, technical, historical and medical subjects. ''World Book'' was first published in 1917. Since 1925, a new edition of the encyclopedia has been published annually. World Book, Inc. is based in Chicago, Illinois. According to the company, the latest edition, ''World Book Encyclopedia 2022'', contains more than 14,000 pages distributed along 22 volumes and also contains over 25,000 photographs. Academic American Encyclopedia
''Academic American Encyclopedia'' is a 21-volume general English-language encyclopedia published in 1980. It was first produced by Arête Publishing, the American subsidiary of the Dutch publishing company VNU''Kister's Best Encyclopedias'', 1994 (later acquired by Nielsen Media Research in 1999). Arête Encyclopedia The initial product, Arête Encyclopedia, was created on a schedule that was too tight resulting in many difficulties. The first Vice President of Editorial, Larry Lustig, came from Encyclopaedia Britannica and found the pressure too great. He was replaced by Michael Reed who came from ''World Book Encyclopedia''. Reed asked several times to have the production schedule lengthened to straighten out what had already been produced and assure reasonable time for completion. After six months, with no schedule change, Reed resigned rather than have his name associated with the work. Grolier acquired the encyclopedia in 1982.
