Bible Translations Into Telugu
The first translation was by Rev. Benjamin Schulz who translated parts of Bible in the early part of 18th century. The manuscripts were sent to Germany for printing but were not printed. The main translation into the Telugu language was Lyman Jewett's version of the 1880s. This is today known as the "Telugu Bible OV" (పరిశుద్ధ గ్రంథము), published by the Bible Society of India Andhra Pradesh Auxiliary in Hyderabad. In collaboration with ''Church centric bible translation'', Free Bibles India has published Telugu translation online In 2019, the New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures was released by Jehovah's Witnesses as a complete Bible translation in Telugu. Telugu Language
Telugu (; , ) is a Dravidian language spoken by Telugu people predominantly living in the Indian states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, where it is also the official language. It is the most widely spoken member of the Dravidian language family and one of the twenty-two scheduled languages of the Republic of India. It is one of the few languages that has primary official status in more than one Indian state, alongside Hindi and Bengali. Telugu is one of six languages designated as a classical language (of India) by the Government of India. Telugu is also a linguistic minority in the states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, Orissa, West Bengal, and the union territories of Puducherry and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Lyman Jewett
Lyman Jewett (March 9, 1813 – January 7, 1897) was an American Baptist Churches USA, American Baptist missionary known for translating the Bible into Telugu language, Telugu. Background Born in Waterford, Maine, Jewett studied at Worcester Academy and Brown University before earning his Doctor of Divinity from the Andover Newton Theological School, Newton Theological Institution. He sailed with his wife for India in October 1848 and reached Nellore in April 1849. The founder of the Telugu Mission in Ongole was Samuel S. Day. After Samuel S. Day, Jewett was the central figure of the Mission along with John E. Clough. The results of the mission were meagre and the home organisation repeatedly pressed for its closure. Jewett and his wife were home, sick, in America in 1862 when one such attempt was made to stop funding for the mission. He learned Telugu from a Brahmin convert. Bible Society Of India
The Bible Society of India is a Christian body that is authorized to translate, produce, distribute and market the Bible and is a member of the United Bible Societies. The motto of the Society is to translate the word of God into languages, which people can understand, in a format they have access to, and produce the scriptures at a price people could afford to buy. The Bible Society works together with many organizations in India to translate the Bible into various languages of India. New World Translation Of The Holy Scriptures
The New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures (NWT) is a translation of the Bible published by the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society; it is used and distributed by Jehovah's Witnesses. The New Testament portion was released first, in 1950, as ''The New World Translation of the Christian Greek Scriptures'', with the complete New World Translation of the Bible released in 1961. It is not the first Bible to be published by the Watch Tower Society, but it is its first ''original translation'' of ancient Biblical Hebrew, Koine Greek, and Old Aramaic biblical texts. Although commentators have said a scholarly effort went into the translation, critics have described it as " biased". Jehovah's Witnesses is a millenarian restorationist Christian denomination with nontrinitarian beliefs distinct from mainstream Christianity. The group reports a worldwide membership of approximately 8.7 million adherents involved in evangelism and an annual Memorial attendance of over 21 million. Jehovah's Witnesses are directed by the Governing Body of Jehovah's Witnesses, a group of elders in Warwick, New York, United States, which establishes all doctrines based on its interpretations of the Bible. The United Bible Societies reported that the Bible, in whole or part, has been translated in more than 3,324 languages (including an increasing number of sign languages), including complete Old or New Testaments in 2,189 languages, and the complete text of the Bible (Protestant canon) in 804 languages. According to Wycliffe Bible Translators, in October 2017, 3,312 languages had access to at least a book of the Bible, including 1,121 languages with a book or more, 1,521 language groups with access to the New Testament in their native language and 670 the full Bible. It is estimated by Wycliffe Bible Translators that translation may be required in 1,636 languages where no work is currently known to be in progress.
