Biathlon At The 1980 Winter Olympics – Sprint
The men's 10 kilometre sprint biathlon competition at the 1980 Winter Olympics was held on 19 February, at Lake Placid Olympic Sports Complex Cross Country Biathlon Center. In sprint, competitors race over three loops of the skiing course, shooting two times, once prone and once standing, with each miss being penalized by requiring the competitor to race over a 150-metre penalty loop. Results The sprint was added to the world championships in 1974, and made its Olympic debut in Lake Placid. Two-time defending world champion Frank Ullrich was more than 10 seconds clear after the first shoot, and despite two misses at the second shoot, he actually saw his lead increase, allowing him to pull away in the final section and win by more than 40 seconds. Vladimir Alikin, Kjell Søbak, Erkki Antila and Anatoly Alyabyev were closely matched after the first shoot, but Alikin, who shot clear, and Alyabyev, who missed once, pulled clear for silver and bronze, while Antila missed two sho ...

Lake Placid Olympic Sports Complex Cross Country Biathlon Center
The Lake Placid Olympic Sports Complex Cross Country Biathlon Center is a venue located in the Lake Placid Olympic Sports Complex at Lake Placid, New York. During the 1980 Winter Olympics, it hosted the biathlon, cross-country skiing, and the cross-country skiing portion of the Nordic combined events. The center was constructed in 1978 and today has over of trails for cross country skiing along with a biathlon venue. Alfred Eder
Alfred Eder (born 28 December 1953) is an Austrian former biathlete. Life and career Eder was born in Piesendorf, and has been a soldier and thus competed as a member of the Heeressportverein (army sports club) Saalfelden. He competed in six Winter Olympics, and jointly holds the Austrian record for most Winter Olympic appearances along with Mario Stecher and Markus Prock. He is the father of biathlete Simon Eder and was a coach of the Austrian biathlon team. He received a life ban from the Austrian Olympic Committee in 2007 as one of 14 team officials who were implicated in doping activity at the 2006 Winter Olympics. Lyle Nelson
Lyle Barber Nelson (born February 9, 1949 in McCall, Idaho) is a retired American biathlete. He represented USA at four Olympics. At his last Olympics in 1988, he was the flag bearer. In 1976 he finished 35th in the Individual 20K biathlon. He led off the American team with Dennis Donahue, John Morton and Peter Dascoulias as they finished 11th place in the 30K relay. In 1980, when USA hosted at Lake Placid, he finished 19th in the new 10K sprint biathlon and joined Martin Hagen, Donald Nielsen Jr. and Peter Hoag Jr. in finishing 8th in the 30K relay. In 1984, he returned to the Individual 20K biathlon, finishing 26th. He joined Nielsen again along with Bill Carow and Josh Thompson in finishing 11th in the 30K relay. Luigi "Gigi" Weiss (born 17 December 1951) is a former Italian biathlete and ski mountaineer. Weiss was born in Vattaro. Together with Angelo Genuin and Bruno Bonaldi, he placed first in the military team category in the 1975 Trofeo Mezzalama edition, which was carried out as the first World Championship of Skimountaineering. At the 1979 Biathlon World Championships, Weiss won bronze in the 10 km sprint.
