Bi-Autogo (automobile)
The Bi-Autogo was a prototype American cyclecar, built from 1908 to 1912. Designed and built by Detroit artist & engineer James Scripps Booth,Clymer, p.115. it had the usual two wheels (wooden-spoked, ), plus two pairs of smaller, retractable outrigger wheels in the three-seater body. Fitted with wheel steering, it had a 45 hp (33.5 kW) V8 engine (, ), the first of its kind from a Detroit company, with an external copper tube radiator, and a weight of . Just one was built. It is in the collection of the Detroit Historical Society. The Bi-Autogo was restored in 2017 by Mobsteel in Detroit. Scripps-Booth was a United States automobile marque based in Detroit, Michigan. Established by James Scripps Booth in 1913, Scripps-Booth Company produced motor vehicles and was later acquired by General Motors, becoming a division (business), division of it, until the brand was discontinued in 1923. History The company was founded by artist and engineer James Scripps Booth (of the E. W. Scripps Company, Scripps publishing family), who also built the Bi-Autogo (automobile), Bi-Autogo. Although the company's first models were cyclecars, Scripps-Booth later produced a "luxurious light car" intended for the luxury market. Designed by William Bushnell Stout, William B. Cyclecars
A cyclecar was a type of small, lightweight and inexpensive car manufactured in Europe and the United States between 1910 and the early 1920s. The purpose of cyclecars was to fill a gap in the market between the motorcycle and the car. A key characteristic was that it could only accommodate two passengers sitting tandem style or passenger behind the driver. The demise of cyclecars was due to larger cars – such as the Citroën Type C, Austin 7 and Morris Cowley – becoming more affordable. Small, inexpensive vehicles reappeared after World War II, and were known as microcars.
