Jagdish Natwarlal Bhagwati (born July 26, 1934) is an Indian-born naturalized American economist and one of the most influential trade theorists of his generation. He is a University Professor of economics and law at Columbia University and a Senior Fellow in International Economics at the Council on Foreign Relations. He has made significant contributions to international trade theory and economic development. He is widely regarded as the intellectual father of the Indian economic reforms of 1991. He is the only professor in American academia to have a chair named after him while he was still teaching at the university. He is one of only 10 scholars who hold the title of University Professor at Columbia University. Career Sandeep Bhagwati was born in Bombay, Maharashtra, India to a German mother and an Indian father. Living in Germany since the age of five, Bhagwati went to school at the Athenaeum Stade in Stade, Lower Saxony, Northern Germany and studied from 1984 to 1987 at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg with teachers such as Boguslaw Schaeffer, Kurt Prestel, , Kurt Maedel, Josef Maria Horváth and Rupert Huber. Bhagwati Charan Verma (30 August 1903 – 5 October 1981) was a Hindi author. He wrote many novels, his best work was '' Chitralekha'' (1934), which was made into two successful Hindi films in 1941 and 1964 respectively. He was awarded Sahitya Akademi Award for his epic five-part novel, ''Bhoole Bisre Chitra'' in 1961 and Padma Bhushan in 1971. He was also nominated to Rajya Sabha in 1978. Early life and education Verma Sahab was born on 30 August 1903 in a Kayastha family in Tahsil Safipur, in present-day Uttar Pradesh, India, where he received his early education. Bhagwati Charan Vohra (15 November 1903 – 28 May 1930) was an Indian revolutionary, associated with Hindustan Socialist Republican Association. He was an ideologue, organiser, orator and a campaigner. Early life Bhagwati was born in 1903 in the family of a senior railway officer named Shiv Charan Vohra who was conferred with title of 'Rai Bahadur' by British Raj in 1919 for his services and loyalty.
